I've said, many times, not to skimp on SS defense.   That 85 across the board is what you need in order to just be adequate.   I'm finding myself in a situation where I might be a hypocrite.   The players:

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Ed Branyan

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Enrique Pena

Branyan could be a GG SS while Pena did win a GG at 3B last season.    Branyan, if given 650 PA, might end up with 50 runs created.   Pena will finish with 125-130 runs created.   Using my positive plays per season, Pena will cost me a play more than Branyan every couple of games.

Banyan's better, but Pena is still decent. I can't imagine he would cost as many runs vs Banyan than he would produce over Banyan.

Pena still exceeds BL avg for a SS in every rating.

Anyway I'd start Pena, and if he started costing me more runs than I was comfortable with I would put Banyan in at that point.

Of course I am assuming that the whole debate is necessary due to another great bat ready to take the 3B spot.

I say Branyan - IF you have the rest of the team in place to sacrifice the bat - and move Pena to another position.

This is coincidental, I've been wondering about it recently because I've seen a lot of players available in free agency who fall short of SS-worthy at JUST ONE of the four ratings - usually range or glove.  So I've been wondering just what it's worth.

I can tell you that if that 82 was some other place but range, I wouldn't even think of it.

I have experimented with a strong bat that was slightly under in one of the four, and I couldn't stomach it.

At least imo, Pena is a different story because he IS above every rec rating.

This is my current 3B(who is injured):   Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Eric Fick   Nothing special.

The plan, for next season, is for  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Geovany Redondo to play 3B, as my current CF  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Sammy Flores will move back to 2B and a minor leaguer will take over in CF( Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Trent Leake).    Unless, of course, I decide to move Pena back to 3B.

No team is perfect. Pena by a mile.

I would take the GG from Branyan. Better question... do you have to bring the kid up? i would think a year of offense and def from Branyan at SS and Pena in CF would turn out more productive then one from Pena at SS and the kid in CF.

Obviousy I don't "have to".    I just try to plan my team out ahead of time.    I'm not sure Leake will develop enough arm-wise to play CF next year.  I just think "If he is ready....."

Now why would you say "Branyan" and vote Pena?   That make no sense.

Personally I'd put Fick at another position, place Pena back at 3rd where he won the GG, and play Branyon at SS again. Branyon has produced enough O to be happy with to go along with the better D.

Penas career fielding stats look worse due to his first 3 years in the league Playing SS when he wasn't fully developed. Now he is an above average defender who would be a silver slugger at SS. Don't know what else you're looking for there. Although, if nothing else, he should get every start at SS vs lefties while Branyan is riding the pine.

I'm in a heavy hitters park and three of my SP have a STM of 62 or below.

"Don't skimp at SS" is not the same as "Play your best defensive SS regardless of bat" (which takes you off the hypocrite hook). Pena's a decent enough defender. If you didn't have the defensive stud for comparison, would you feel you're hurting yourself with him at SS? If you'd be comfortable using him with 85 range instead of 82, you're giving up a ton of offense for 3 points. Maybe start Pena, set him up as a defensive replacement at any other position, set Branyan as defensive replacement at SS, and be aggressive with the Replacement settings?
4/19/2015 12:43 AM
Yeah, I'd feel like I'm shorting myself on D even if I didn't have Branyan.    I built the team from the ground up(TWC rules) so I obviously had to acquire players.   Due to my home park, and my propensity for using low stamina pitchers, I felt I needed to build a somewhat ridiculously strong D.     So I had the idea of Branyan-SS, Flores-2B, Pena-3B and Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Richard Barry at 1B.   I thought I might have a potential GG player at every infield position.     The addition of Redondo got me thinking as it gave me more flexibility.     That's where the idea of Pena at SS came from.

Pena, all day and all night.

The key here is what foulballz caught-- somebody decided to play the 19-year-old Pena at big-league SS with ratings in the mid 70's across the board.  And the 20-year old Pena with ratings in the high 70s, and the 21-year-old Pena with ratings averaging 80... you get the point.  You can't use Pena's career stats to calculate his bad play rate.

If you look at his defensive stats at ML SS just since he was at or near his current ratings (about 900 innings), he's at zero +/-, and the same fielding pct as Branyan, about .975.  Branyan is +18 in a bout one season's worth of innings.  So Pena will only give up about 20 plays a season to Branyan, which is 10-12 runs, which is way, way less than their offensive difference.
