Tandem Pitchers.... Topic

So I am still trying to figure out just how the Tandem Pitching works. Will someone help shed some light on just how this will work? I am trying to get one of my franchises out of the cellar and willing to try something new. Thank you in advance.

If your team is decent you'll have one guy that has a W total through the roof (because they can pitch more often). We had a guy in Riley with 27 wins one season and his team didn't make the playoffs thanks to him pitching on the back end of a tandem.

Generally, you use two pitchers who are lacking in stamina to get you deep into games. Ideally, it's a L/R combination. They have to be last in rotation 4A/4B. It requires some work if you're using 1, 2, 3, 4A/4B because there is the possibility that 1 won't be fully recovered in what is, essentially, a 4 man rotation.

If you have pitchers capable of 50 pitches, it's probably more work than it's worth. Just know your 50 pitch pitcher is only going to give you 3-4 innings and build your bullpen appropriately. I use low stamina guys all the time if their other ratings are good enough.

I have a full tandem team. That is 8 pitchers in a 4 man rotation. Some people don't like that kind of thing, but my first year in a league I had a couple of guys with 50's stamina and really good splits. Plus there were two other really good pitchers available in Free Agency but one had 50's stamina and the other was exactly 60.....so I figured I would give it a try for a few seasons. Since then I have acquired other undervalued guys (because of the low stamina) to feed the beast.

Essentially each of the 8 pitchers gets between 130 and 175 innings a season doing it this way. Between the two of them each game they will typically go 6 to 8 innings. I have been in the top 3 in the AL in pitching WHIP and ERA since adopting this strategy.

I will caution that you have to really pay attention to pitch counts and get that right if you want to do tandem with lower stamina guys. Otherwise guys can wear down, or worse yet get knocked around in the last inning they are in.

When you do this, how many guys do you need in the bullpen?

Either 4 or 5 depending on how often the bullpen guys can pitch. I have used 5 man bullpens, but you could do a 4 man if you had 4 guys with really good stam/dur.

Well that was a terrible format. 74/61/61/63/51 stamina. I have a LR up for the CY with an 18-5 record.

141 games in, I have one starter with 141 innings(he has the most amongst SP) and two over 130.

In another world I have a 20/54 and a 20/55 DUR/STM combo as SP. There's more than one way to build a staff.

Why is it recommended that they are a L/R or R/L combo tandem?

You run thru the other team's pinch hitters or get favorable split match-ups when pitchers are swapped.
