I am late in my second season at Missouri S&T and feel really behind in terms of being a good recruiter.  Just want some general feedback about the level of player I have been able to get thus far.  I also don't seem to get what works at each position.  I mean I have read all the threads and try to implement what I read from some coaches with really good track records.  Not sure I am getting it right.

So, the specifics of this team.  I think I have improved the roster in the 2 years, but not enough to compete at a high level.  My roster:

Here are the guys I have brought in:

Sr. Frank Shuford...recruited him as a Jr. and I think he is an excellent D2 player.  I was able to pull him down from D1.
So. John Landry...I believe he has the speed, ball handling, and perimeter skills to be a solid 3 point shooter for the next couple of years.
So. Charles Nguyen....Again, I think this guy can be a really good long range shooter.
So. William Williams...Looking for this guy to be a low post stud over the next 2 years.  Solid rebounder and shot blocker too.
Fr. Steven Shim...Not sure what to think about this guy.  I am thinking he may just be a solid backup at both PG and SG.
Fr. Leslie Hayes...Speed and Ballhandling would lead this guy to be my PG of the future, but he is not a good passer.  Should be Hi-Hi in passing though.
Redshirt - Kenneth Griffin...Probably a 4 year backup at PF/C

Going in to next season I think Shim, Hayes, and Landry give me a solid backcourt.  I should be able to shoot from outside with Landry and Nguyen and hit you inside with Williams.  The 2 returning guys that I did not recruit will be Shelton and Thomas.  Both at least provide solid rebounding, and this season they have shot the ball well in limited minutes.  For next season's recruiting, I think I need to go after a really good big guy and a true passing point guard.

My projected starting lineup:

PG Steven Shim
SG John Landry
SF Charles Nguyen
PF Joseph Thomas
C William Williams

Just some tips as far as D2 recruiting goes, At C- prestige you shouldn't even bother recruiting anything but dropdowns unless the guy has a significant amount of high potential. Obviously you should recruit the guy who projects the best, I'm just saying odds are the dropdown will be a better player.

Its been a while since I've been in D2 (took a 2 year break from HD) but I'll just give some opinions.

Hayes, if he could get up to 60+ passing could be a decent PG. If hes still high in passing you have some hope there.
Landry, Looks for a good shooting SG. Hes got a little rebounding and low post which should help him out too. (can play SF if needed)
Shim, looks like a backup to Hayes, not much more
Nguyen, seems to be looking like a SF whos going to end up with a lot of speed and range, which should make him a great scorer (can play SG if needed)
Williams, personal opinion but I enjoy having PFs/C who have a little perimeter but it doesn't seem to matter at D2 he'll be good on the inside
Griffin - The words 4 years backup scare me, I only put a redshirt on a guy who looks like he has tons of development and I want an extra year of him.

I agree with your recruiting you should got for a true PG and bigman who can board. With the other two spots don't be afraid to recruit some guys with versatility. A PF who can play SF perhaps. And maybe have a little fun with the other one experiment a little. Get a guy whos a specialist in something, or try and find a guy who has tons of high potential but isn't that great just yet.

Thanks for the input.  And congratulations on taking me out of the conference tournament.

A few notes from what I scanned:
1. It takes BH to be a great shooter. Can be a third or fourth or fifth option with really high PER and low BH as a spot up shooter, but really without BH the shooting should suffer a bit and (worse) the dude will turn it over.
2. If a guy is going to be a 4 year backup I think he really needs higher WE. If he had modest potentials I probably wouldn't have redshirted him.
3. William Williams seems to be your best recruit, great name too.
4. Hayes could potentially turn into a PG if his passing is really high/high (and a good high/high at that), but I'd like a little more athleticism out of him.

Seems like you have the program at least headed in the right direction and you have to keep improving on recruiting and play evaluation until you get to a point where you can have a team that is consistently in the tournament and eventually a contender.

Tanner,

I am a little surprised when you say as a C- I should only recruit dropdowns.  I have been recruiting some.  Williams, Shuford, Shim, and Hayes were all dropdown.  Can't remember for sure about Nguyen.  I know Griffin was not.  But, if a C- should only recruit dropdowns, is anyone going after the D2 guys?

Good D3 teams are going after the D2 guys.
