Kentucky came in, literally on the last possible cycle (5 PM on signing day) and completely supplanted us on a SF. We've had a huge battle since, as MSU had a substantial war chest. Some people would say that this was unfair gamesmanship. I don't think so...although I definitely was lulled enough into complacency by our lack of battles that I thought we'd sign everyone without a problem. Also, who picks a fight with an A+ school with recruiting money for 7 players, and only 50 miles of distance between them and the kid, when the unexpected competitor is 290 miles away and has other battles? Whatever, oddly enough it looks like he'll probably win. Hard to fathom exactly how much he's spent on our guy, but it has to be a lot.
Anyways, assuming we don't get him, Cole will start at PG to begin the year, backed up by Kincannon; Freud will start at SG, backed up by Nutter; Juhl is an immediate upgrade over Barry Thomas at SF, so he'll start there, backed up by Thomas...though Richard Watson could easily play SF, as well. Hmm, that may allow us to redshirt Kincannon still, and would free up time at PF for Sheehan. That's worth thinking about.
Anyways, my point is the team will be fine without Jessie Cole, assuming we lose him. I'll post him all the same.

'Word on the Street' as of 3/22 2:49 am EDT: Our sources are saying that he's definitely leaning towards playing at Kentucky.
[edit:]
We officially did not get him. I am very curious to know what UK put forward. We lose a lot of recruits to them.
[edit again, and I hope cimmy won't mind me posting this:]

- haha, no problem izzo.
I had 91k to spend on him and ended up spending only 82 of it (plus a start and 20 minutes because i wanted him to start anyway to get that WE up). by my calculations you needed about 70k to top my 91 and was pretty sure you didn't have it.
it was the conference's tournament cash that was the difference there. sec had 43 each as opposed to the big ten's 11.
he was my favorite recruit in the area, with that amazing potential, so he was worth the boatload of cash IMO. and it didn't help that kentucky was BARREN and the international forwards left a lot to be desired.

Calipari,
You managed to pull that recruit away from MSU...I didn't think it was possible. All's fair, etc. We'll be fine without him. I was curious about how much you spent and promised. We spent $58k and promised the start and 15 minutes. We were closer than you. If you wouldn't mind indulging me, I'd like to know what you had to spend to get him away from us.

Well, well, well - guess who's recruiting class was just ranked #3 by CollegiateInsider.com? Nice job! Everybody in the Athletic Department is really excited - I think I'm even getting the administration behind what you're doing. Keep up the good work!
