Heisman recruiting just wrapped up and it was interesting.  I have DePaul.  Had to coach this team, or Marquette, before I quit.  It's still a head-scratcher to me why they roll out a new engine for "realism" but keep the same conference alignments including the football powerhouses DePaul and Marquette---but I digress.  The "mcbethbr" account is at USC and the "nelsonba25" account is at ND.

Very early in recruiting USC is on an OL (http://www.whatifsports.com/gd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?pid=6013238) with the last name "Galvan." The OL is in the State of Michigan---2000+ miles from USC and within 360 miles of DePaul.  No preference for either school. He was the #6 OL and #35 overall recruit according to the WIS rankings (I know, WIS rankings are WIS rankings but having that attached to a recruit raises the visibility of a player.  Very hard to slip through the cracks).  Oh, and the OL was also a "sky's the limit recruit."

USC had about 18 or 19 open scholarships and I had only 9---but with that distance it was ripe for the taking.  Any way, I go after the recruit late on the second day of recruiting (still just USC) and it becomes a two-person race between DePaul and USC.  No other schools.

I check-in around signing time and I find the mcbethbr account (USC) has been busy sitemailing me in the cycles before signing.  I'm assuming the Nova Scotia winter or the government desk job made him snap.  Here's the first:

#7 OL Jeremy Wilson, 163 miles from you, considering Cinncinatti and a Mid-Major Sim, would be a cheaper, and equal or better quality, than Galvan. IMHO :)

In other words, go away.  While the smiley face was a nice touch, the amiable Canadian soured when I am guessing he ran out of cash or saw the handwriting on the wall---that he wouldn't be able to sign the recruit.  Here's the second sitemail....

Too bad you didn't take my advice. Guess you'll figure out why next cycle. Funny how a lot of other coaches turn out to be interested in a guy when they find out he's a sky is the limit recruit.

Thanks for playing. Better luck next time.

Now for those of you following along at home, I think you have an idea of what happens next.  After these emails, and aftersignings, what account magically appears---nelsonba25 at ND.  USC falls off the day of signings and ND eventually signs the OL on Day 5 of recruiting.

Here are the many things that stand out.  First, ND (the nelsonba25 account) was real close in distance to the OL recuit---less than 180 miles.  What does that mean?  He had a bigger distance---and scholarship advantage----then DePaul.  And he had an even bigger distance advantage over USC then I did.  It would also only cost him about $800 bucks for a CV and, more importantly, $140 bucks or so to send an AC scout visit to this recruit.

Second, the nelsonba25 account, scouts the area deeply---and well.  Having recruited in the same area for several seasons, I have seen ND "green" many players that are, currently, DIAA at best (at an elite, this will happen with just an AC visit).  The idea being, find the "growers" not the "show-ers" [potential---not ***** size].  I think many others would add to the recruiting prowess of the nelsonba25 account.

Third, there was another OL in the State of Michigan signed by USC (http://www.whatifsports.com/gd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?pid=6011699).  USC was on him early----and that recruit was also within 180 miles of ND----but ND had no interest in that player. Guess ND didn't need OL too badly.

Taken all these things together, it raises many questions.  If the mcbethbr account "tipped off" the nelsonba25 account about the "sky's the limit recruit" after signings as his sitemail to me would have you believe, then this would mean nelsonba25 never scouted Galvan. Mmmmmmh.  It would have  only cost $140 for an AC visit to a top #35 recruit within 180 miles of his school that was considering an elite (USC) that is 2000+ miles from the recruit.  This wouldn't peak nelsonba25's interest enough to at least send an AC scout to see if he was missing out on something good?

Also, if the nelsonba25 account didn't scout Galvan, it means that account was provided with critical recruiting information from another account (mcbethbr) that benefited nelsonba25.

If the nelsonba25 account did scout Galvan---and, thus, knew about the "sky's the limit potential"---why wait until after signings, and after the mcbethbr account sitemail to me, to begin recruiting him.  If nelsonba25 wants the recruit, has the advantages and has the cash, why wait until USC feels they are f#cked and will not land the recruit before jumping in.  Really strange that ND would wait until USC gives him a green light before going after a "sky's the limit" recruit in his backyard.

Also, why would the mcbethbr account care who gets the recruit if the recruit doesn't sign with USC?  Why is it better that he sign with ND rather than DePaul?  I have no history with mcbethbr.  No nasty sitemails. Nada.  Not even in response to his site mails in this case. Moreover, we are competing for a recruit in my backyard so it shouldn't be too shocking that I would go after the recruit---and that USC would lose that battle.  But despite all that, when it becomes clear to the mcbethbr account that USC will not get the recruit---he steers the recruit to the nelsonba25 account at ND?  Gift wrapping a recruit for another elite?  No connection there, mmmmmmmh.

Glad to see I got under your skin potter.  I think the story is pretty clear from my sitemails.  Galvan's blocking of 75 ruled him out of a lot of elite searches which is why I had him green for so long.  Once you started on him I wasn't shy about sharing his potential.  Why should I care who signs the recruit?  Maybe because I'm not fond of coaches jumping on a green recruit and I don't care how far that recruit is from my campus.  At that point I was glad to see anyone sign the recruit except you.  I would have sent the same message to the rest of the Big Ten until I found s/o who was interested and had the cash left.

I don't keep records of recruiting, that way I don't get upset by someone doing whatever they do to win a recruit.  But---I do remember this last class that USC was doing some long distance recruiting--came all the way down to Houston and picked up a couple of recruits that I had green in my back yard.  Now I can't complain, I was batteling Texas, Baylor, & TCU along with some very determined SIMS, so I didn't have enough $ to go around and wound up loosing all those battles.  That being said, I don't have a problem with Ben.  I've been recruiting against him here and in other worlds ever since he started.  He is good at what he does, and if he did let us know that there was an STL available so be it.  If you play this game, you have to expect to have things happen.  I know potter has been around for a while and has taken his share of recruits from me and others, that's part of the game, recruiting probably being the best part of what is now the Game.

I'm going to have to side with Potter on this one.  Battling is one thing, but to go behind the other coach's back telling someone else to get involved (basically fighting your fight for you) seems a bit wrong to me.  And to try to undermine Depaul, a basketball school, seems a bit $hitty too.  ;)

Total bush league child crap! If you cant  man up and get the player you want yoursefl you call your big brother at ND to fight your battles for you! Loser

hahaha, personally I think what Mcbeth did was absolutely brilliant. There are no rules in place preventing him from doing this, you guys can make up some **** about how its wrong to let another coach in on a recruit. Noone cares, play by make believe rules if you want. There's nothing you can do to enforce them on others

You are giving me too much credit here.  I can't tell Nelson/ND to do anything.  I could only tell him the recruit's potential, and as I told potter, knowing this obviously altered nelson's opinion of the recruit's worth.  I gained nothing from sharing this info, except a little schadenfreude.

This is called colusion (spelling) and is against game rules. Turne the dumb fu@k in for rule violation potter. Screw him. I WOULD.

EDIT:  Are you admitting to sending a sitemail to nelsonba about this recruit?

I have to agree with fermor. The first thing I thought when I read this....it is collusion and is against the game rules?? This seems no different than recruit list sharing, etc. It is collusion against another coach.
Does seem kind of petty he had to get another coach to do this because he lost a recruting battle.
He basically admits on here he did it, so I would report it to WIS

First coach is gilty of contact with an other coach about an other player and the second coach is gilty for not turning in the other coachn Both are gilty of collusion ( spelling right this time ) This is direct violation of the rule. SEND A TICKET IN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
