1.  League Structure

We will follow baseball history as it played out with teams, leagues, divisions, playoff structure, etc.  You will follow your team's history, use their ballparks, relocate if they do, etc.

The alignment and schedule will be as follows:

1901-1929:  6 AL + 6 NL, 162 game season, no interleague play, only a World Series
1930-1960:  8 AL + 8 NL, 154 game season, no interleague play, only a World Series
1961:  10 AL + 8 NL, 162 game season, no interleague play, only a World Series
1962-1968:  10 AL + 10 NL, 162 game season, no interleague play, only a World Series
1969-1976:  12 AL (6/6) + 12 NL (6/6), 162 game season, no interleague play, LCS + World Series
1977-1992:  14 AL (7/7) + 12 NL (6/6), 162 game season, no interleague play, LCS + World Series
1993:  14 AL (7/7) + 14 NL (7/7), 162 game season, no interleague play, LCS + World Series
1994-1996:  14 AL (5/5/4) + 14 NL (5/5/4), 162 game season, no interleague play, LDS + LCS + World Series
1997:  14 AL (5/5/4) + 14 NL (5/5/4), 162 game season,  interleague play, LDS + LCS + World Series
1998-2012:  14 AL (5/5/4) + 14 NL (5/5/6), 162 game season,  interleague play, LDS + LCS + World Series

2.  Initial Draft

We will use the entire 1901 database, giving each team 23 players.  Each team will then get  1 pitcher and 1 utility player from the 1890's to fill their roster.  Each team will have the SAME PITCHER AND PLAYER.  This will ensure enough PA's and IP's to get through the season.

This draft will be snake style, using random.org to set the order.

3.  Contracts

After you have drafted your 23 players.  You will assign a contract to them.  This is how long you have possession of the player.  These are the maximum # of years you may assign:

1 - 10 year contract
1 - 8 year contract
1 - 7 year contract
1 - 6 year contract
2 - 5 year contracts
2 - 4 year contracts
5 - 3 year contracts
5 - 2 year contracts
remainder - 1 year contracts

So for example, you can sign:
1 player to a 10 year deal, 1 to an 8 year deal, and 1 to a 7 year deal.
OR
1 player to 9 year deal (which would use your MAX 10 contract up), 1 to an 8 year deal, and 1 to a 7 year deal
OR
1 to a 10 year deal, 2 to 7 year deals (using your 8 max and 7 max contracts)
OR
Any combination, not exceeding any of the max contracts above.

You could theoretically sign 6 players to 5 year deals (using your max 10, max 8, max 7, max 6, and 2 max 5's)

4.  Season 1

We will align the teams into their real life leagues and play season 1 using a 162 game schedule.  AL and NL champs will meet in the World Series.

5.  What Standings Determine

A.  Free Agent Credits
The World Series Champion will receive $100 dollars to use towards free agent bidding.
The World Series loser will receive $90 dollars to use towards free agent bidding.
The 2nd place teams in each league will receive $80 dollars.
The 3rd place teams in each league will receive $75 dollars.
The 4th place teams in each league will receive $70 dollars.
The 5th place teams in each league will receive $65 dollars.
The 6th place teams in each league will receive $60 dollars.

1.  6th place team with worst record
2.  6th place team with better record
3.  5th place team with worst record
4.  5th place team with better record
5.  4th place team with worst record
6.  4th place team with better record
7.  3rd place team with worst record
8.  3rd place team with better record
9.  2nd place team with worst record
10.  2nd place team with better record
11.  World Series loser
12.  World Series Champion

6.  Free Agent Bidding

All players whose contracts have expired are now free agents.  I will post a list of all free agents and then you will submit blind bids to me for them.  I will send my bids to the first 2 people to send me theirs, prior to me opening their bids, so I won't know anyones bids before i submit mine.

A.  If there is a tie for the highest bid for a player, i will sitemail those owners for a 2nd round of bidding on that player, until the tie is broken.
B.  You may bid on as many players as you like each round, as long as you do not exceed your alotted dollars.
C.  There will be no contingency bidding (i.e. I want Player X for $50, but if i dont get him, i want player Y for $45).  You must make your decisions on who to bid on wisely.
D.  We will do a maximum of 5 rounds of Free Agent Bidding.  Any player who received no bids, will be thrown into the rookie draft pool.
E.  Amount bid on free agent determines the length of contract the player gets (but may be "bought up")...see next post

YOU MAY CARRYOVER UNUSED FREE AGENT DOLLARS TO THE NEXT SEASON...AT A 50% TAX.  SO IF YOU HAVE $100 TO USE BECAUSE YOU WON WORLD SERIES AND YOU ONLY USE $80, YOU MAY CARRYOVER $10 TO THE FOLLOWING OFFSEASON, AND YOU LOSE THE OTHER $10.

7.  Free Agent Contracts

Your winning bid determines the contract length.  See table below.  Some notes:

A.  You are stuck with the length of the contract that you bid. If you place a bid that equals a 5 year contract, but your player only has 4 years remaining, they get a 4 year deal obviously.  BUT...if your player has 4 decent years followed by a 26 inning, 9.55 ERA year in year 5, and you bid $50, you are stuck with him in that final year.  There are no cuts in this league, just expired contracts...so in other words, like real baseball, these contracts are guaranteed deals.

B.  You may "Buy up" a player you win.  For example if you win Player X with a bid of $25, but you want him for 4 years instead of 2, you may "buy up" your bid after the fact to the MAX of the 4 year deal price, which is $49.  You may only do this if you have remaining funds obviously.  You MAY NOT buy up to a 7th year...6 year buy up for $69 is the maximum.

Winning Bid $ Contract Length
$70 and up 7 years
$60-$69 6 years
$50-$59 5 years
$40-$49 4 years
$30-$39 3 years
$20-$29 2 years
$19 and below 1 year

8.  The Rookie Draft

All rookies in 1902 plus all players who received no bids as free agents will be placed in the rookie draft pool.  We will draft as many rounds as needed until all players are gone.

For the first few seasons at least we will use all players, until we reach a point where there are more players than needed for 25 man rosters, at which point we will cap it at 25 players per team.  We will revisit adding manual AAA players once we get far enough along that there are enough players to do so.

You may assign your drafted players the following maximum contracts, which you will assign after the draft is complete:

1 - 7 year contract
1 - 6 year contract
1 - 5 year contract
1 - 4 year contract
remainder - 3 year contracts

These are just the maximums, you are free to sign players to any length, even just 1 year...you just can't exceed 1 each of a 7 year, 6 year,  5 year, and 4 year contract.

I believe that sums it up...but i'm sure i have forgotten something or another.  I will update this post with any FAQ's i get, so we can be sure to hammer out all the details that I may have forgotten.

You will use your REAL team name and ballpark.

So for example, here is how my team will play out:

I have signed up with the Baltimore Orioles.

1901-1902:  Baltimore Orioles - Oriole Park IV
1903:  we move and become the New York Highlanders
1903-1912: New York Highlanders - Hilltop Park
1913: Change Name to New York Yankees
1913-1922: New York Yankees - Polo Grounds IV
1923-1973:  New York Yankees - Yankee Stadium I
1974-1975:  New York Yankees - Shea Stadium
1976-2008:  New York Yankees - Yankee Stadium II
2008-present:  New York Yankees - Yankee Stadium III

FAQ follow ups:

1.  When we reach the expansion era, we will expand just as real life baseball did.  We will deal with the expansion drafts once we get there (way down the line)...but with the free agent contracts, etc., it will be a fairly smooth expansion.

2.  IR seasons DO COUNT towards your contracts.  So if you draft a player who plays in 1901 and then not again until 1904, you will need to sign him to at least a 4 year contract if you want to still have him in 1904.

3.  I edited it to now say 23 players per team in 1901.  I miscalculated by not taking away players who had multiple partial seasons.  Your remaining 2 spots will be filled with a player from the 1890's and a pitcher from the 1890's (everyone will get SAME players).  These spots will slowly disappear and turn into real players as we progress and the database gets larger.
