I didn't realize he was only 33. He's got a shot at 600 HR if he keeps getting 500-600 ABs a season for the next 4-6 seasons.
8/3/2013 12:42 AM
He's going to have an unbreakable strikeout record.
8/3/2013 12:48 AM

Question is, if he hits 550-600 HRs, does he get HOF consideration?

8/3/2013 3:30 AM
Probably not.

Since he's not going to get 500-600 AB for the next 4-6 seasons, I think it's probably a moot point.

Dave Kingman say "**** Adam Dunn in the HOF".

If he decides not to hang them up, I have a hard time believing a team like Houston (or another crappy AL team) wouldn't want a 30-40 HR DH in their lineup.

I wouldn't vote for Dunn either but 500 HRs (and especially 600) are traditionally magic numbers. Kingman achieved neither.

I don't think Adam Dunn has much of a chance. A bunch of homers, walks, and strikeouts with a terrible batting average and he hasn't been on a team that has made the playoffs. I don't believe the voters give a crap about 500 homers anymore.

He's not going to be a 30-40 HR DH for another 4 to 6 years unless he's chemically enhanced.  And he does everything else so poorly now that he's worthless as a 1B/DH type the second his power starts to slip.  Hell, he's almost there while still hitting the HRs.

We haven't had our expectations for players in their mid to late 30s properly re-programmed since the end of the steroid era.

500 was a magic number until the club more than doubled in a 10-15 year period.  And he's not getting to 600.

Only reason he gets ABs right now is his contract. The Astros just sent Carlos Pena home because he's done.

400 was the magic number before Kingman hit it and didn't make the HOF.

His highest MVP voting finish was 21st in 2010.  Was he losing out to a bunch of guys that were using PEDs, when maybe he wasn't (certainly his performance hasn't shown significant dropoff since testing started, at least not beyond what would be expected as a result of aging)?  Sure.  But still, if he couldn't break into the top 10 in MVP voting, ever, he doesn't merit even momentary HOF consideration.

The White Sox might move on if they weren't already paying him big bucks, but he's still got enough pop in his bat that I think he'd fine work.

But Pena's definitely a good case study in what you're likely to see from him in the next couple years.  Power doesn't typically age well without help.
