Carlos Delgado

Having talented first basemen was fun.  Miss those days.

Delgado is correct.

What player was walked eight times in a doubleheader to set a record?

A. Max Bishop
B. Rusty Staub
C. John Olerud
D. Barry Bonds

I'll guess A because it's the obscure one.
12/13/2013 3:08 PM
That is correct.

Max Bishop is the only player since 1900 in a full season to have more runs than hits as well. In 1930, he scored 117 runs while only getting 111 hits. He finished that season with a .252/.426/.408 slash line. He's 15th career in OBP at .423, but he played in the wrong era for that, and barely anyone has heard of him.

When was the first time a future hall-of-famer hit a walk-off homer in a playoff game off a future hall-of-famer? I believe it's also the only time.

Everyone remembers Randy Johnson's famous relief appearance to close out the 2001 world series. But he had another notable relief appearance that same season. Curt Schilling started a game against San Diego, pitched 2 perfect innings, then a bank of lights went out, forcing the game to be suspended. The next day, they resumed the game with Johnson pitching, officially in relief. He kept the no-hitter going until the 8th inning, and finished with a 3-0 one-hitter. In the seven innings, he set the record for strikeouts by a relief pitcher. How many Padres did he strike out?

I don't suppose Bill Mazeroski's famous homer was off another HOFer?
12/13/2013 3:24 PM
Twas not.  Happened after Maz's homer, so don't kill yourself thinking about the old guys.

I have no idea re: Johnson.  I'll guess 12.

I'm guessing the pitcher is a reliever. Gossage, Sutcliffe, Wilhelm or Fingers?

Nope.  Hint #2: Not a reliever.  Pitched complete game.

Edgar Martinez had a life-size poster of Max on his wall growing up.
12/13/2013 3:37 PM
I thought that was Mickey Mantle?
12/13/2013 3:50 PM
OK, post '60, pitcher in the HOF, pitched a complete game, not a reliever. That's a small list I think. I definitely don't know the answer but I can start guessing at parts of it...

Nolan Ryan?

By the way, Randy Johnson struck out 16 batters in those 7 relief innings. It's easy to forget how insanely good he was. There's nobody like him today.
