Advice on my team Topic

Every once in a while I start reading posts about the nuances of how this game works (especially how players score) and it makes me rethink my team (D3, flex, zone) a bit. I'm in that mode now and could use some objective opinions, especially with recruiting starting soon in Rupp. Here is my roster - not sure how the copy/paste will work and whether the colors will transfer:

Name Yr. Pos. A SPD REB DE BLK LP PE BH P WE ST DU FT OVR
Victor McGuire Sr. PG 35 68 1 51 3 1 70 66 80 78 91 75 B+ 59.8
Melvin Sliwinski So. PG 32 81 2 30 3 16 78 64 57 51 85 51 C+ 55.7
Keith Robichaud Sr. SG 68 87 8 64 15 1 77 57 42 87 82 64 B- 58.1
Marco Hinton Jr. SG 33 72 8 31 13 19 94 67 44 48 71 40 B 54.8
James Leyva Fr. SG 53 52 12 51 3 8 53 36 32 52 74 45 C+ 41.0
Lewis Serisky Sr. SF 68 64 55 74 46 66 40 46 24 87 88 57 B- 57.4
Joel Hulings So. SF 58 49 32 68 25 43 60 36 34 53 79 80 C- 49.4
John Bryant Jr. PF 59 36 71 68 84 18 2 12 38 94 80 23 C- 49.4
Richard Houchins Jr. PF 53 25 63 42 46 76 13 20 29 40 61 84 C 48.0
David Hibbard So. C 66 26 64 49 58 31 16 32 26 63 76 78 C- 49.7
Vince Merrill Fr. C 53 16 76 48 57 26 16 22 40 34 72 30 C 49.4

Here are my thoughts/questions. Ignore the seniors since they'll be cycling off my roster tonight.
1. Hinton and Sliwinski are horrible defensively but should be able to score a lot from the perimeter. Sliwinski's PE will max out at 98 or 99 and his SPD still has room to grow.
2. Hulings should be a serviceable SF but I'm curious whether he can be an effective scorer? His PE and LP are low potential.
3. Who should my starting post players be? My thought is Bryant because he's a good defender and then Hibbard at least for the start of the season because his ATH and IQ are better than Merrill's at this point. Then I would bring Houchins off the bench with a pretty high distro since he should be a good LP scoring option as long as he's not facing an elite defender.
4. Final question - can Levya develop into anything other than a defensive stopper? His ATH, DEF, and BH are high potential and PE and PASS are average.

Appreciate any wisdom you've got...

Just in general I think your team is going to struggle a little bit. In a flex you are going to want to recruit a bit more passing than have on your roster. For a zone, I think you are going to need to put a little more emphasis on rebounding.

Having to guards in a zone in the 30s defense could be very problematic. In a 2-3 the defensive ratings get averaged together, so I would try to get one of the guys to be a strong defender to boost the overall back court defense.

Good luck

Edit: i was comparing your team to good DIII pressing teams when saying you might struggle.

Thanks for the feedback milwood. I had a few recruiting misses a couple cycles ago and I'm paying for that now. I think my rebounding will be back on track once Hibbard and Merrill develop to their potential.

In hindsight I probably asked too many questions in my original post. What I'm most interested in is whether there is any chance Hulings and Leyva can be decent scorers in a non-traditional sense. My estimate of their ratings at full potential:

Hulings                         Leyva
ATH     62                    ATH     75
SPD     53                   SPD     54
REB     36                   REB     15
DEF     73                    DEF     70
BLK     38                    BLK     3
LP       45                     LP       8
PER     60                    PER     67
BH       38                    BH       57
PASS   43                   PASS    46

I prefer Leyva because of the better ath and bh but both are serviceable and will be able to score a little bit. I would expext the player to be elite at something to play him at small forward with a bh in the 30s and I would hesitate to start that guy against the press but then I'm a little paranoid about playing pressing teams.

More I look at it I strongly prefer Leyva

I like Hulings ;)

I thinks he's more off a matchup scorer though. I he is playing against a slower PF type at the SF, let him shoot 3's. Playing against a third guard with lower ATH and no BLOCK, let him work that LP.

Levya could play the 2 or 3 IMO but he's pretty much going to be outisde shooter at the 3. If you have a 40 ATH/1BLK type guard covering him at the 2 you could certainly drop him down to a -1 and see if he can attack the basket.

In a nut shell those guys are solid pieces on a d3 NT team. They shouldn't be your main scorers though.

I can see the points you're making - thanks. That brings up another question. Next season, and possibly the season after that, I'm going to need some significant minutes from Leyva while my new recruits develop. If you had to pick the 2 or the 3, where would you play him? I'm sure it would depend on the other players I've got, but just generally speaking...

Who else you have and who you are playing are big parts but he is more a 3 on a real good team if you can rebound well at the 4 and 5.

Also depends if you're running a 2-3 or 3-2.  Remember in a 2-3 you average the PF and SF and C stands alone. 3-2 averages PG,SG, and SF together.  Right now Bryant is a good C in 2-3.

That part about the C standing alone is interesting. I had always understood that C, PF, and SF were averaged together in a 2-3 zone.

Looks like a fairly solid team to me.
