Let's say Wilson was indicted on murder/manslaughter.   Goes to trial.    Line of witnesses are paraded thru the courtroom.   Testimony is, of course, thrown out by any of them that initially stated Wilson shot Brown in the back while he was lying on the ground.   Jury finds Wilson not guilty of all charges.    Do we get protests/riots?
Good question. I would guess yes, but maybe with more media coverage and enough time to pass where everyone can understand that Wilson really is most likely innocent, there wouldn't be.
Your guess of "yes" is correct.    The people who are rioting would have rioted with a not guilty verdict in a trial.   Hell, some of them would have probably been disappointed with a guilty verdict because they'd have had to find another reason to loot.

If black convictions in Ferguson (and I don't see reasons why whites also couldn't as well) increase, I doubt that "the same crowd" would have much of a problem since there's specific evidence showing the crime committed, and showing how the police officer was acting.
You're being naive.   The people looting and rioting are criminals.   This specific incident is giving them power to congregate and commit criminal activity as a group.   A group that cannot be contained by conventional means.    And no one wants to say "Shoot these ******* criminals" because that will bring a new criminal element into the picture.

There are legit protestors.  But the people looting/rioting couldn't care less about "systematic racism in America" or Michael Brown.   They are criminals taking advantage.    Anyone who thinks otherwise is either very naive or a bleeding heart liberal who just won't accept the truth.

I don't disagree with any of that (except for the first sentence) The rioters exist because there are protests.  If it's clear that a black 18 year old committed a crime and deserved to be shot, I don't think there are protests there, at least not strong ones, since it's clear the PD did nothing wrong. Rioters don't appear anytime a white man kills a crime-committing black man.

Our judicial system doesn't work if you've already decided guilt/innocence.
And our law enforcement system can't work if they decide potential for guilt/innocence based on skin color.  Which is the underlying reason these protests exist.
The only solution to a problem like that is to have 1 cop of each race in every patrol car or only have a black cop handle crimes against black criminals and white cops handle crimes against white criminals. It'll never happen. The demonstrators/rioters are asking for something that can't be given.
As I said earlier, cameras on cops, so we can see what happens in these cop altercations.
We are all fine with cameras on cops. No one is against that. Cameras on cop cars and on vests has tremendously increased convictions in court over 90% in many studies while reducing the chance of violent confrontations from those aware they are being filmed. That's a good thing, and expensive, but probably worth the cost.

One doesn't need to riot for that... They need to legislate.
For the seventy-second time...there is no need for riots, I agree.  The rioters are acting like animals.

You understand there are different groups of people there who are rioting, and another group that protests during the day, right? The reporters there are suggesting that the majority of the people rioting show up at night.
So when cameras are on cops and black convictions increase, will the same crowd have a problem with that?

Edit: "burn this ***** down" was from Michael Browns stepfather. He's a key player. Al Sharpton saying the prosecution was rigged, what good does that do to stop the riots? Leadership :(
Al Sharpton's credibility (if he ever had any) went down the toilet with the Tawana Brawley incident in the 80's.

Agreed. I think he does a disservice to the African-American rights movement.

Nope. White people riot after really important things like:

the Giants winning the world series

and pumpkin festivals

Let's not pretend rioting is a black thing.   It seems limited to World Series victories or frat boy parties but plenty of young, white males partake.    Those feel more like "drunken idoicy" but they do turn into criminal activity.
11/26/2014 2:12 PM
Of course it's not. It's like saying "crime is a black thing."

ugh

Why is that?

I would guess some percentage of them feel some sort of moral outrage about something, and feel (wrongly) that violence and destruction is an appropriate outlet.

I would also guess that a much larger percentage of them, however, are rioting because it's a free opportunity to break stuff, burn stuff, and steal stuff.  Because it's fun to break and burn, and who wouldn't want free stuff?
