A quick change to the standings. Futbol Club Oviedo, at 4-0-2 has 14 Group Stage points, clinching first place in Group E. I had it listed as 12 for some reason. That locks Rushmore FC into the 2nd transfer spot.
Now to this evening's contests. No more drama could have unfolded than what happened in Group C, where Burnaby Hillbillies and The Shield of the Cow played the final game to determine who would advance. The Cow, needing to win, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Emerson Heçija knocked home a header early in the 2nd half. Burnaby then responded with a pair of goals of their own after Aluino Belenguer scored in the 70th minute, helped by The Cow goalie Luke Sengier mishandling the ball. In desperation mode for the last 20 minutes, things fell apart for The Cow after leading scorer Halbert Labazares got a straight red card to the dismay of the entire club. Down a man, they couldn't recover and the 2-2 tie eliminated The Shield of the Cow from the tournament, making a rare early exit. Group C actually ended up in a three-way tie for 2nd place but Burnaby Hillbillies advances based on goal differential.
Another high stakes matchup occurred in Group G, where butterfiles united jumped from 3rd to 1st after a dominating performance over Brighton AFC 4-0. The game was never really in doubt as butterfiles scored twice in the first 6 minutes and cruised to a 3-0 halftime lead. Brighton, which had already clinched, seemed disinterested and put up little resistance as they have to settle for 2nd place in the group. The result eliminates Aurea Cruce Aquilonis, which needed a Brighton victory.
Bordeaux Fighting Bovines made a statement when they hit the road and crushed FC Not Very Athletic 6-1, wiping out their negative goal differential and placing them in no worse than a tiebreaker situation for the final Group F playoff spot. Athletic did not look very athletic this evening, as they yielded a whopping four goals to The Cattle's Orlondo Rosario. Athletic is now in a must win situation with their final game against SwampDragons United, which is also in a must win situation. Athletic's biggest problem is a -7 differential, which will be hard to erase.
A couple of other games also went final. My Fußball-Club Köln 01/07 e. V. team ended it's hapless tournament with a 0-6 record as they put up a fight to the far superior Swamp City Dragons but fell 3-1. Three different Dragons scored and Pacorro Malave tallied for Köln. The win solidifies the Dragons as the #1 seed in the Knockout Rounds, handling Group B with a 5-0-1 record and 16 stage points. Also Merchiston FC made up for the cancelled game that cost them a draw and beat Fighting Ants in the return matchup 3-1 in front of a sellout of 60,000. Thomas-VanLuijk De Meyer atoned for his red card blunder in the game against FC Trojans of SC and knocked in two. Merchiston and Trojans are now tied at 6 points apiece, with the Trojans currently holding the 2nd tiebreaker of away goals. Merchiston does have a game in hand as the second spot in Group H will be between those two squads. Real TK was eliminated as they had needed an Ants victory to keep their slim hopes alive.
Six games tomorrow and more playoff spots on the line.
