We finish the first round of divisional competition at Oakland.
Game 25: Milwaukee parlays four singles and six walks into three runs, which is just enough to eke out a win in the opener, 3-2, behind Ron Reed and the bullpen. John Strohmayer gets his third save.
Game 26: Batting leadoff, Larry Hisle hits his second homer, but the heart of the order fails miserably with men on base and the Invaders even up the series with a 5-3 win.
Game 27: Oakland scores in only one inning, but it's a big one.. Danny Coombs throws five shutout innings but then allows four in the sixth. Milwaukee can't get any offense going and falls 4-2.
Game 28: Bill Zepp suffers another beating; Oakland takes the series with a 14-1 win in the finale.
5/11/2007 9:50 AM
We have some interleague matchups on tap, against Montreal and San Francisco.
Game 29: Montreal scores an unearned run in the eighth to tie the score at one; the game goes to extras. Nate Colbert seemingly wins the game with a two-run blast in the 10th, but Rich McKinney matches it in the bottom half off a tired Fred Norman. Ted Sizemore comes through with a two-run triple in the 11th, however, and Gary Waslewski throws a scoreless bottom half to preserve a 5-3 win.
Game 30: Noah Dorgan hits a grand slam off Andy Messersmith to cap a seven-run third inning, and that stands up in a 7-5 win.
Game 31: Nate Colbert hits his fifth home run and Tommy John "scatters" 11 hits as the Riders win at Candlestick, 7-3.
Game 32: Frisco evens things up with a 2-1 win behind Jim Perry. Larry Hisle's leadoff homer in the ninth brings the Riders within a run, and they later get Richie Hebner to second base, but he is stranded there when Ted Sizemore flies out.
Returning to PL play, we get ready to host the East-leading NY Mammoths (20-12).
5/13/2007 7:30 AM
Game 33: Bill Zepp pitches somewhat like a major league pitcher, and the Riders take a 6-3 lead after a five-run outburst in the fifth, but the bullpen can't hold on, with Bill Lee taking a beating in the eighth as the Mammoths rally to take the opener by a 9-7 score.
Game 34: The Mammoths put a hurt on Brandon Rometti, scoring seven runs in his 4.2 innings of work, and defeat the Riders 9-3. Nate Colbert's three-run home run accounts for Milwaukee's only score.
Game 35: Nate Colbert homers in the first, Ron Reed throws six scoreless innings, and the Riders salvage the finale, 4-1. Colbert ends up with three RBI, giving him 31 for the season.
Two interleague sets are next, against Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
5/13/2007 10:57 PM
Game 36: Milwaukee takes the opener from Pittsburgh, winning 9-8 when John Strohmayer strikes out Luis Alvarado in the ninth with the tying run at third. Nate Colbert hits two solo home runs and AAA outfielder Chris Snyder drives in his first two runs.
Game 37: Danny Coombs helps his own cause with two doubles, and Jake Gibbs hits a pinch hit home run as the Riders rally from a 4-0 deficit to sweep Pittsburgh with a 6-4 victory.
Game 38: St. Louis struggles against Bill Zepp, but gets great pitching on their end, and wins the game 3-1 on Rico Carty's 10th-inning home run off Gary Waslewski.
Game 39: St. Louis takes the second game by the same two-run margin, 4-2, despite being outhit 7-4. Richie Hebner's first homer provides Milwaukee's only runs; Tommy John takes the loss to fall to 5-3.
We travel to Detroit to face the 18-21 Stars.
5/14/2007 10:23 PM
Game 40: Brandon Rometti takes another beating, and the Riders are crushed, 10-1. Rometti's role is clearly to be the sacrificial lamb who allows the other starters to get their full rest, but the bullpen will be taxed in his starts.
Game 41: Another game, another stunning 1-run outburst by the Riders. We've now scored five runs in our last four games. This time we're limited to two hits by Catfish Hunter while Ron Reed is shelled in the 8-1 loss. Richie Hebner's homer provides Milwaukee's only offensive highlight.
Game 42: Milwaukee drops its fifth straight, although they show some offense in this one, a 6-5 decision. The Riders even take a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Darold Knowles can't hold the lead, losing his first decision of the season.
We're coming home to face Washington (18-24)
5/16/2007 6:37 AM
Game 43: Bill Zepp pitches better than usual, but not well enough, and the bullpen gets lit up like a Christmas tree. Washington takes the opener, 10-6; four of Milwaukee's runs are unearned.
Game 44: A six-game skid finally ends behind Tommy John, who gets some help from Nate Colbert's 10th home run of the season. Milwaukee wins, 6-3; Ted Abernathy throws two scoreless innings for the save.
Game 45: Milwaukee finally wins a series, getting 12 hits to back a good performance from Ron Reed in a 5-2 win. Nate Colbert gets his 39th RBI.
We travel to Baltimore next to face the IronBirds (22-23).
5/17/2007 6:34 AM
Game 46: Brandon Rometti allows no earned runs in his 3.2 innings, and the Riders get a grand slam from Ethan Natz to take a 7-2 lead in the seventh. The bullpen, however, melts down, and the IronBirds score three in the bottom of the ninth on Ollie Brown's home run to tie the score at 7. Eddie Leon singles home a run in the 10th, but Fred Norman loads the bases in the bottom half and then allows a run-scoring single. Ethan Natz throws out the potential winning run at the plate. The game goes on. Tommy John pinch hits in the 14th and singles to lead off. He later comes around to score on Al Ferrara's single, but Baltimore answers again as Maury Wills doubles and scores on a Johnny Callison single to tie things again. In the 18th inning, Richie Hebner finally puts an end to things, crushing a three run home run. Ron Reed throws a scoreless bottom half, his fourth inning of work, and the Riders win.
Game 47: Milwaukee clinches a rare series win over Baltimore, as Danny Coombs and Darold Knowles combine on a two-hitter. Ethan Natz hits his fourth homer and the Riders win, 3-1.
Game 48: Bill Zepp lowers his ERA to 10.00, but the Riders commit three errors that lead to SEVEN unearned runs, four of them in a six-run eighth inning, and the IronBirds salvage the finale, 10-7. Terry Harmon hits his first home run AND steals his first base.
Another interleague set is next, with Philadelphia and San Diego the opposition.
5/18/2007 6:42 AM
Game 49: Tommy John and Dave LaRoche combine on a four-hit shutout as the Riders win in Philadelphia, 4-0. Terry Harmon continues his hot streak with two RBI, and Tommy John has two hits to raise his average to .353.
Game 50: Ken Holtzman throws eight shutout innings against the Riders; Jack Heidemann hits a two-run triple in the ninth but it's too late to affect the outcome; Philly wins, 5-2.
Game 51: Brandon Rometti falls to 0-6 while San Diego's Bob Veale throws eight strong innings to improve his record to 2-8 in a 9-1 win for the Gringos. Al Ferrara's home run prevents a shutout.
Game 52: Bill Zepp pitches well for 6.1 innings, and the Riders outhit San Diego 12-5, but the bullpen chokes up two in the eighth and one in the ninth to give the Gringos a 6-5 win.
We're headed to Chicago to face the Central-leading White Sox (36-16).
5/19/2007 7:11 AM
Game 53: The White Sox throw Tom Seaver against Milwaukee's Tommy John in the opener. As expected, it was a low-scoring game, with Chicago on top in the end, 4-2. Seaver strikes out 11 in eight innings while John collects only three strikeouts in seven frames. Chicago outhits the Riders 11-4.
Game 54: Milwaukee reaches the 1/3 mark of the season with their 32nd loss; Danny Coombs takes a beating in this one and falls to 3-6. Al Ferrara has a home run and 2 RBI; Larry Hisle strands four baserunners and runs his BA down to .207.
Game 55: Milwaukee's skid reaches six games. This was the expected result when Brandon Rometti took the mound, but the Riders made it interesting. Nate Colbert's three-run home run touched off a six-run rally that tied the score at 7 in the eighth. Chicago's Rick Monday, however, hit a solo homer off Dave LaRoche in the bottom half that gave the White Sox a win. Joe Hoerner struck out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth for the save.
We're ready for another round of divisional play, traveling to Kansas City to face the Blue Sox.
5/20/2007 5:02 PM
Game 56: Don Wilson handles the Rider bats, and Danny Cater has three hits with three RBI for the Blue Sox as KC takes the opener, 8-3.
Game 57: Eight losses in a row for Milwaukee as KC wins a slugfest in game 2, 13-10. Ron Reed gets shelled; Gary Waslewski and Dave LaRoche do likewise. Milwaukee scores five in the eighth to pull within a run, but the Blue Sox score twice in the bottom half.
Game 58: Finally! A win! Bill Zepp has his best start of the season, allowing only one run in seven innings, but Darold Knowles picks up his third blown save when he allows two in the bottom of the ninth. Ethan Natz doubles home a run in the 10th, then scores on Thurman Munson's two-run triple. John Strohmayer allows a leadoff single in the bottom half but retires the next three batters to preserve a 7-4 win.
Our next stop is Anaheim to face the division leading Hells Angels (38-20).
5/21/2007 2:05 PM
Game 59: Back to our losing ways as the offense is silenced by Rudy May, who improves to 8-1 at Danny Coombs' expense (3-7). Larry Hisle's solo home run in the third provides Milwaukee's only run in a 5-1 loss.
Game 60: Un. Believeable. Milwaukee scores seven in the third to take an 8-2 lead. For some reason, Brandon Rometti is removed and an overworked Bill Lee is brought in to pitch the third. He allows nine runs. Anaheim goes on to win, 14-13, as a four-run Milwaukee rally in the ninth falls short. Al Ferrara strikes out to end it with the tying run at second.
Game 61: Tommy John picks up his eighth win, throwing eight shutout innings at Hell Angels and getting just enough offense to leave with a 3-0 lead. Ted Abernathy gets through a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout.
We return home to face Oakland.
5/22/2007 3:19 PM
Game 62: Milwaukee opens the homestand with a win over the Invaders, getting four home runs (including two by Ethan Natz) and six strong innings from Ron Reed. Oakland manages only an RBI double by Willie Mays; Riders win, 9-1.
Game 63: A reversal of fortunes in Game 2, as Oakland gets the strong pitching in a 7-1 win. Bill Zepp pitches ok (three runs in six innings) but falls to 0-7.
Game 64: Oakland takes the series with a convincing 9-1 victory behind Rich Hand. Oakland scores four in the first off loser Danny Coombs (3-8). Milwaukee gets only two hits, one an RBI double by Thurman Munson.
We have a quick interleague set with the Los Angeles Sunsets (25-39) before facing Cleveland.
5/23/2007 3:27 PM
Game 65: BRANDO ROMETTI!!!!! throws six scoreless innings and gets his first win of the season as the Riders shut out the Sunsets, 4-0. Richie Hebner has three hits, including a triple, and scores twice.
Game 66: Milwaukee sweeps LA, overcoming a poor outing by Tommy John with a 16-hit attack, paced by Mike Lum (3-5 with a double, his first home run, and five RBI). Richie Hebner adds three RBI and Nate Colbert hits his 14th home run.
5/24/2007 1:54 PM
Game 67: Mike Lum continues his power spree, hitting a three run home run, and Ron Reed is brilliant, allowing only one hit in seven innings, as the Riders crush the visiting Flames 10-1 in the opener. Reed contributes two hits and three RBI while Richie Hebner has another three-hit game (including two doubles).
Game 68: Richie Hebner commits two errors, giving him 17 for the season, Bill Zepp allows four unearned runs, and Cleveland romps to a 10-2 win. Zepp's record falls to 0-8. Thurman Munson drives in Milwaukee's only two runs.
Game 69: Milwaukee gets four RBI from its catchers, as Jake Gibbs' pinch-hit two-run homer in the sixth keys a 5-4 win over Cleveland. Dave LaRoche gets the win in relief and John Strohmayer picks up his sixth save.
We travel to Minnesota to face the Mooseheads next.
5/25/2007 6:38 AM
Game 70: Brandon Rometti throws another great game, allowing only one run in seven innings, and the Riders beat Minnesota 4-2. Slumping Nate Colbert, batting average down to .228, hits his 15th home run.
Game 71: Mickey Lolich throws a complete game AND drives home two runs as the Mooseheads defeat Milwaukee 4-2. Thurman Munson drives in another run, continuing his recent hot streak, though he has only 30 RBI for the season. Tommy John takes the loss, falling to 9-6.
Game 72: Milwaukee outhits Minnesota 7-3, but the Riders strike out 11 times and draw no walks, falling 3-0 to Sonny Siebert.
We return to Milwaukee to face the Boston Stranglers, who lead the East at 39-33.
