Division Strength Topic

Are you in a tough division or an easy division?   Here are the average pre-season ranks by division.  For example, if the 1, 2, 3 and 4th ranked teams were all in the same division, the division average would be = 2.5.  If the 93, 94, 95 and 96th teams were in the same division, that division average would be 94.5.    The overall average is 48.5.

Some background:  The 96 teams are split into four leagues (A, B, C, D) where the teams are spread evenly throughout the leagues.  You will never see a situation where 10 of the top 16 teams are in the same league.  But once teams are designated to a specific league, the division alignment is purely random.  So, typically the top 16 teams are split evenly where four of these teams are placed into each of the four leagues.  It is still possible for all four Top-16 teams to get randomly assigned the same division.  That's exactly what happened in Division 6-C.

Which owners are in the toughest division, in aggregate?  One adjustment needs to be made.  The owners own ranking must be removed from the average.  Here is a summary of the average ranking of each owners' division-mates.  Low number = tough divisions.

rbow923 will have no excuse if he doesn't advance to round 2.  The average ranking of all 18 of his division mates is 62.
8/5/2010 2:02 PM
my deadbeat division mates are already 6 games over .500, apparently nobody told them they were supposed to lose.

i'm pretty sure this will be the only list where i'm near the top.

This.  I hadn't really noticed they looked exceptionally challenging, but I don't have very consistent internet access right now so I haven't been paying all that much attention...

Any idea when we will get a standings link? I'd like to see me in the top 10 for a few moments before I disappear off to the bottom half of the competition..hehe..
8/5/2010 7:51 PM
I've already contacted Tom Z. about this.  But I haven't heard back.

Interesting ... so we could do a very crude weighting system to estimate relative performance. If we assume that owners are evenly spaced in rank (so that we don't need to peek into schwarze's rating system), that the top-rated owner would win a fixed percentage of games against the bottom-rated owner over time, and that teams from the same rank would split their games (obviously not possible in a single game, but possible in aggregate terms: an owner might be in a division where the mean rank of the opponents was equal to his or her own), we could then generate an expected winning percentage and compare that to actual winning percentage.

Naturally, crude is an understatement for a calculation like this - aside from confusing discrete and continuous ratings, it ignores the strength of non-division opponents, which represent a significant portion of the schedule - but it's fun and I have spare time.

Say that we assume a winning percentage of .800 for 1 facing 96. My rank is 62, and the composite rank of my opponents is 43.4. My expected winning percentage would be .441; through the AM cycle today, it's actually .449, which means I'm exceeding expectations. lolz. (If we assume .850 for the 1-v-96 matchup, then it drops to .431; at .750, my winning percentage should be .451.)

It's fun! It's meaningless! Try it yourself! I call it Zlionsfan's Ordinal Measurement Grade.

i'm good with numbers zlionsfan and I dont quite follow. I now what your saying and I love the thought and the logic is there I just feel lie I'm missing a step in your equation
