If you remove him from the 40 and he we have 6+ years of pro service at the start of next season, he will not renew.

If you demote him before rollover, his salary the following season could revert to $54K, assuming he is pre-arb. This was not always the case, but I have two former ML regulars in Mays who've spent two consecutive seasons in AAA. During the rollover from S6 about three months ago, their salaries dropped.
