2004 Pat Borders: $1,134,555 for 55PA of .487OPS. Yes, he has an A+ arm, but his $/PA is $20,628, the 6th highest of any catcher in the entire WIS database.

Also check out the 1969 Azcue (55PA), 1974 Humphrey (59PA), 1965 Roof (61PA), 1980 Stimac, 1964 Duncan, 1965 Gonder, 1964 Ranew, and many many others.

Simply put, if you are a low-PA catcher with an A+ arm, you are now extremely overpriced. Makes no sense. All of the guys listed above are in the top 30 most expensive catchers in the WIS database on a $/PA basis. Prorated to a full-season, Borders would cost more than $10M.

Something is very wrong in the pricing algorithm for A+ arm catchers.

yeah fielding prices really got hiked. I notice you get a C/C outfielder that has great batting on the cheap now. Ozzie Smith's 1987 season went up like 2 million because he's A+/B+. I heard other owners say defense wins championships though.

I wonder if there was a hike in players that steal bases? I notive a lot of strategies in open leagues are now based on stealing.

Defense and pitching used to win championships. The previous update changed that to offense. Be interesting to see what happens next.

All of the above with the exception of Borders, were $200k at one time. Another, and the most glaring to me, is the 2008 Corky Miller who for just under $1m... gives you a .285 OPS and 67 PA.

I think I paid 615k for a backup catcher with a C+ arm. Maybe 100PAs give or take.

I think that such a premier on batters was placed on this update I am going to use this guy as a late inning PH in an OL

Clark, Howie2002 Baltimore OriolesL580.30253.301.361.39611.3251$200,000--D/D-------D-/D

His pound numbers are in there too I think this is a steal for 200K. I'm gonna get 60 PA's with a chance of .300

Let me rephrase this, since I think I may not have stated my point clearly. I am not expressing surprise that the price of defense went up by as much as it did. Frankly, an increase in the salary-value of defense was overdue.

Rather I am expressing that I think WIS has made a mistake here, and that these salaries are errors. Right now, most of these guys are more expensive, per PA, than (as an example) the 1927 Lou Gehrig.

Right now Borders is the 20th most expensive position player (ANY position) in the entire database. 1990 Steve Decker is more expensive per PA than 1920 Babe Ruth. 1990 Bill Schroeder is more expensive than 1924 Hornsby. 1969 Azcue is more expensive than 2003 Bonds. All of the other catchers I listed above are more expensive than the 1911 Cobb.

Of the top 50 most expensive players (per PA) in the SIM, at least 15 of them are low-PA, mediocre-to-bad offense, catchers with A+ arms. Something is awry.

The most expensive Johnny Bench season (which of course has an A+ arm) is priced at 12,888/PA.

Check out the '53 Williams.

I completely agree with contrarian23. It's insane what some of these A+ armed crappy-hitting catchers cost. It has to be a mistake.

10/25/2009 9:28 PM
I was just saying that all players went up on basis of defense by a lot. Catchers are probably are extreme case.
10/25/2009 9:32 PM
I have submitted a ticket asking about this. I'll report back what I hear.

Nikospade, I understand that defense went up by a lot, but why are these terrible-hitting catchers more than 50% more expensive (per PA) than someone like the 1972 Bench, who is also an elite defensive catcher?

It's a mistake, I'm convinced.

One thing is for certain. Teams with speed will be the way to win. Drafting an A+ catcher arm costs way too much now. Guys will be running wild. I think I will sit out for a while until WIS fixes this obvious problem.

Got to be a mistake.

I think with the pricing as such the platoon will be a good way to go and the only way to go for catchers since it is impossible to get a cheap A+ arm. Just a thought.
