As a coach, I hated when the other team used a Carl. If the kid needs a 6' wide plate in order to throw a strike, he needs more practice. Eventually he's going to hit somebody. As a player, I hated facing a Carl for the exact same reason. You just can't get comfortable in the box against Carl. So, really, it depends on how "so-so" Carl's control is and what sort of coach you want to be. If Carl tends to hit batters, safety becomes an issue. But, IMO, he also is the best chance to win.
