Lots of interesting stuff here. Wish I would have paid more attention in stats class. Not sure I buy the 2* for a full grade theory. It think it is closer to 25% per 1/3 of a letter grade but have not analyzed it for some time. Also think that A+ schools can skew the data because I think the A+ range is larger than the other letter grades.

I can neither confirm or deny these allegations that I'm a nerd at heart.

Ok... let me bounce an idea off of you guys.  What if you are going about this relative concept entirely wrong?  We've seen instances where the engine stats that 'such and such" is worth X amount of effort.  So think of it like your Visit is worth X% of full value.  Then assume that A+ = 100% value.  Any lower grade would simple be worth Visit x Effort Value.  I've made a quick chart that represents my idea.  I've also spun it around to show the relationship to $50,000 in effort from an A+ school.  I don't know if this is the exact method, but it does his A+ to B+ @ 1.7 and would account for more intense swings at a lower level.  If the argument is that the lower prestige offers less variance, that can also be adjusted for.

Grade % Value  @ $50k   % Vs. A+  Factor vs. A+
A+ 100%  $50,000 100%             1.00
A 85%  $42,500 118%             1.18
A- 71%  $35,625 140%             1.40
B+ 59%  $29,375 170%             1.70
B 48%  $23,750 211%             2.11
B- 38%  $18,750 267%             2.67
C+ 29%  $14,375 348%             3.48
C 21%  $10,625 471%             4.71
C- 15%  $  7,500 667%             6.67
D+ 10%  $  5,000 1000%            10.00
D 6%  $  3,125 1600%            16.00
D- 4%  $  1,875 2667%            26.67

Ive never done any mathmatics to figure it out nor do I even know how to but I think in d2 its 1x the effort for a A prestige to a B prestige.
2/4/2011 5:38 PM
So you're saying they are the same?
2/4/2011 7:29 PM
nah that if an a prestige offers a hv then a b prestige must offer 2 to be equal

Well, that would be 2x the effort, but it's not that large a difference at DII/DIII.
