1930 Washington Senators over 1936 St. Louis Cardinals
Four games to three
MVP: Joe Cronin (.333, 5 RBI)

As even as things could get in this series that went down to the last atbat of the last inning. The Cardinals had Dizzy Dean on the mound in game seven and were one out away from closing it out but the Senators behind MVP Joe Cronin rallied for two runs in the 9th for a 3-2 win. Heartbreak for the Cardinals in a series neither team wanted to lose.

The series had big hitting and a number of blowout games including a 12-0 for the Cardinals in game one and a 14-2 win for the Senators in game 4. In an oddity to show how even the series was both teams had an exact number of 70 hits for the series. All the inning and the seven games came down to a play at the plate where Joe Cronin slid around the tag and the Senators celebrate.

1915 Detroit Tigers over 1907 Pittsburgh Pirates
Four games to three
MVP: Ty Cobb (.500, 5 RBI, 1 SB)

One of those situations where a star player just wouldn’t let his team lose, Ty Cobb showed hid greatness by batting .500 for the series and leading his team to the series win after they were facing elimination. The Tigers were down three games to two before they went back to Detroit and won both games six and seven to win the series.

Cobb did get the better of Honus Wagner who batted .296 and slumped in the crucial final two games with only one hit. Wagner did have a memorable game however in Exposition Park in game three, Wagner stole four bases in the game including a rare steal of home. This was another close series with little to nothing to choose from between the teams.

1960 St. Louis Cardinals over 1913 Philadelphia Phillies
Four games to two
MVP: Hal Smith (.417, 5 RBI)

From the opening game there was a killer instinct in the Cardinals team that have the likes of Bob Gibson in the bullpen. The Cardinals mauled Grover Alexander in the opening game 17-2 when even Larry Jackson hit a grand slam. The Cardinals would take the first three games of the series before Alexander came back with a win and the Phillies took two in a row. In game 6 at the Baker Bowl Ray Sadecki pitched well for the clinching win.

Stan Musial even at 39 years old still has it batting .348 for the series and Julian Javier was a good table setter at the top of the order. Sometimes a team just seems more prepared for a series and that was the case with this Cardinals team; by the time the Phillies got going the series was essentially decided.

1930 Chicago Cubs over 1918 New York Giants
Four games to two
MVP: Kiki Cuyler (.429, 5 RBI, 2 SB)

In a series that saw Jim Thorpe and Rogers Hornsbya very interesting Cubs team roared off four wins in a row and beat the Giants. Hornsby didn’t play much at all but revived his team thaty won three straight games at the Polo Grounds after losing the first tow at Wrigley. Charley Root and Pat Malone pitched well enough in both of their starts as their offense really never had a breakout games.

Hack Wilson who drove in over 190 runs in 1930 only had one RBI in the series as he was pitched around by John McGraw, but the strategy didn’t work as Chicago played small ball when they had to. This Cubs team is very interesting with a great list of stars and the potential to get very hot and win like they did in this series pulling four in a row.

1914 Indianapolis Hoosiers over 1939 St. Louis Cardinals
Four games to one
MVP: Cy Falkenberg (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 K)

The Indianapolis Hoosiers, yes Indianapolis, completely control the St. Louis Cardinals in a five game series thanks to the absolutely dominant pitching by Cy Falkenberg. The Hoosiers of course are the Federal League Champions and with this series prove once and for all the league that lasted only two years was as competitive as any. Falkenberg pitched two complete game shutouts and was basically unhittable.

Johnny Mize had a big series for the Cards but after splitting in St. Louis, the Cards were overwhelmed and had little chance of things in Indiana.

1950 Brooklyn Dodgers over 1953 Chicago White Sox
Four games to two
MVP: Gil Hodges (.346, 2 HR, 11 RBI)

The Bums win four straight in a row including three at Comiskey Park to beat the White Sox who started well but then fell of the table. In the clinching game six that went to extra inning Jackie Robinson singled in the winning run as Jim Russell beat the close throw at the plate. The Dodgers hit well and Gil Hodges drove in the highest total of RBI we have seen yet with 11; Hodges also hit a grand slam in the Dodgers 9-2 in in game four. Brooklyn also only used a three man rotation in the series and it worked out well for them.

The Sox didn’t run as much as one would have hoped and their pitching was just to rocky ending with a team ERA well over five. Other then a good game one performance by Billy Pierce the Sox didn’t get a solid start from anyone in their rotation.

1965 Chicago White Sox over 1970 Pittsburgh Pirates
Four games to one
MVP: Pete Ward (.500, 6 RBI)

The White Sox won 95 games in 1965 and showed why in their series against the young Pirates by wining four out of five in the series, two of their wins came in extra innings when the pressure is on. John Horlan got two wins and is the established ace for the staff that also has 22 year old Tommy John who pitched well in game five. The White Sox staff showed immense control in the series walking only five men while striking out 30 Pirates.

Pittsburgh was close but couldn’t get the big hits when they needed them. Roberto Clemente got the starts over Matty Alou even though Alou drove in the winning run in the Pirates only win. Clemente had a poor series batting only .211 with no RBI and even had an error in right.

1975 Oakland Athletics over 1954 Brooklyn Dodgers
Four games to one
MVP: Billy North (.368, 5 RBI, 3 SB)

Few could argue that the stronger side won this series as the Athletics won four of five and at times in this series looked like a dominant team. The A’s took game three in Brooklyn 13-0 and came from behind down two runs to win the clincher in the fifth game. The top of the Oakland order in Washington and North drove in five runs and were constant run creators in the series. Rollie Fingers closed the door for two saves in the series without allowing even a hit.

The Dodgers had trouble hitting and ended with a .223 average as a team; this number was even lower in the first four games. The Dodgers stole no bases all series and had trouble creating runs, even after Jackie Robinson started the last two games for a slumping Jim Gilliam.

1994 Cincinnati Reds over 1903 Cleveland Naps
Four games to none
MVP: Jacob Brumfield (.400, 3 RBI, 3 SB)

He may have had a team named after him and came through batting .471 in the series, but Nap Lajoie couldn’t help his side enough as the 94 Reds easily took care of Cleveland. Modern baseball had the better in this series and the Reds batted a robust .388 for the series outscoring the Naps 32-15, scoring double the amount of runs.

Jose Rijo won two games but the batting numbers were impressive with five Reds players over .400. Tony Fernandez batted .600 for the series including going 4-4 in the clinching game four win. The 1994 season was a loss for all of baseball and this Reds team but now comes a second chance and to say the least this Cincinnati team came out impressive with the first sweep in the competition.

Booo on the Pirates losing! But hopefully they'll do better in '71. I like the addition of the logos.

1959 Cleveland Indians over 1984 Toronto Blue Jays
Four games to one
MVP: Tito Francona (.375, 4 HR, 6 RBI)

Mudcat Grant won two games for the Indians while Tito Francona and Billy Martin combined for seven home runs and 15 RBI in the series win for the Indians. Cleveland lost game one but then one four of five to push aside the upstart but very young and raw Blue Jays.

Jim Clancy and Doyle Alexander were rocked as Toronto starters in the series combining for 22 earned runs allowed. Without the pitching to support, the fast Jays offense just couldn’t keep up in the end. Lloyd Moseby did steal five bases in the series and batted .458 in the series. Better Blue Jay teams are sure to come into play down the road.
