The average pitcher salary in the WIS database is only $21,713.29.  The average hitter only costs $6411.81.  It's hard to believe. but true.  It also makes for an exciting opportunity...

Draft a team of below average players.
All position players must cost $6411.8 or less per PA
All pitchers must cost $21,713.3 or less per IP
Salary cap is $80M
No AAA, DH, WW, clones or trades
Unique parks, 1st come, 1st serve.

zubinsum,

This is a very clever and interesting way to set this league up. Count me in.

I see that among a number of new league founders: yourself, dhemry (Balanced Team), npjcajun (Average Joes), mixtroy (Unsung Heroes) me °(Wider Rotation and Platoon), there is an interest in seeing more ordinary ball players on teams in WIS. I think this reflects an interest in playing baseball and not JUST winning championships at all costs (even though I would like very much to win one, but with a team I like) that is hopefully catching on.

Since as far as I know we can't set the Draft Center search engine to search on the basis of $/PA or $/IP, I did some quick checking on the calculator:

Below Average Joes

Pitchers:

30 IP times $21,713 =     $651,390
  40 IP times $21,713 =   $868,520
  50 IP  =   $1,085,650
  60 IP  = $1,302,780
  70 IP  = $1,519,910
  75 IP   =  $1,628,475
  80 IP  = $1,737,040
90 IP = $1,954,170
95 IP = $2,062,735

100 IP times $21,713 = $2,171,300
110 IP  = $2,388,430
120 = $2,605,560
125 = $2,714,125
130 IP = $2,822,690
140 IP = $3,039,820
150 IP = $3,256,950
160 IP = $3,474,080
170 IP = $3,691,210
180 IP = $3,908,340
190 IP = $4,125,470
200 IP = $4.342,600
210 IP = $4,559,730

220 IP = $4,776,860
225 IP = $4,885,425
230 IP = $4,993,990

240 IP = $5,211,120
250 IP  = $5,428,250

260 IP = $5,645,380
275 IP  = $5,971,075
280 IP  = $6,079, 640
300 IP  = $6,513,900

For batters:

100 PA times $6,411 = $641,100
125 PA times $6,411 = $801,375
150 PA times $6,411 = $961,650
200 PA times $6,411 = $1,282,200
225 PA times $6,411 = $1,442,475
250 PA = $1,602,750
300 PA = $1,923,300
350 PA = $2,243,850
400 PA = $2,564,400
450 PA = $2,884,950
475 PA = $3,045,225
500 PA = $3,205,500
525 PA = $3,365,775
550 PA = $3,526,050
600 PA = $3,846,600
625 PA =$4,006,875
650 PA = $4,167,150
700 PA = $4,487,700
725 PA = $4,647,975
750 PA = $4,808,250

By the way, what is the League number?

I'd like to play - what's the league number?

italyprof, it is possible to search by $/PA and $/IP. At the bottom of the search page, there is a menu "Player Search Preferences", with three options - beginner, normal and advanced. Set it to advanced, and one of the options you'll get for statistical criteria is $/PA or $/IP.

Italy prof:
You CAN search by $/ip.
Use the advanced search options and change one of the search fields to $/IP.

I'll get a league number once we get 12 or so people in.

Ok, I did not know, so I did it the hard way - math the way the nuns at Catholic elementary school taught me before calculators were invented (we didn't have abacuses either, being in New Jersey). Anyway, the team is built, so whenever you give the word...Definitely a great way to get new faces onto rosters and into pitching staffs and lineups.

One of the scary things about using players not usually found in lineups regularly in OL play is their average performance histories. You look at some guy with a 2.05 ERA, good ERC# and you think Aha! - then you check out perf. history and the average ERA is 7.43 or something. But given the below average level of both hitters and pitchers, we might assume that actual performance here will a little closer to their real levels that year, another factor making them more valuable than before. Thanks for putting this together. Very smart approach.

You can search by $/IP? argh ! ok, I am over it, the math was good for me. But it reminds me of that scene near the end of "The Name of the Rose" when the blind monk tells Sean Connery "You have learned many things in your time here, but the short way through the labyrinth is not yet one of them."

I'm in.

Count me in.  Are we using a DH?  Personally, I'd prefer not, but I'm in either way.

I'll play.

I'll take Candlestick Park if we're picking parks in the forum.

I'll take Tiger Stadium. Haven't used it before. The team is ready to go when you have a League number. It is called " Lake Wobegon."

Can you send us a league number? I have a team sitting ready in the draft center for a while now.

Also, to those not signed up for teams here yet:

Those of us who have participated in similar leagues - the Average Joes and the Wider Rotation and Platoon League really enjoy them, and anyone sitting on the fence looking for a theme league should join this one.

Since Wider Rotation was my own initiation, I will say that the team and the games in Average Joes is maybe the most enjoyable of the leagues I have teams in. The games feel like real games when you see the results. No super-heroics, but sometimes surprising events, a pinch-hitter driving in the go-ahead run in the 8th, a middle reliever or 4th or 5th starter pitching a gem. And that league has seen a couple of no-hitters by pitchers you don't usually even see in OL play.

So I suspect this league will be just as much fun. Join up. Play ball.
