Cuppa Joe Twist Again 1885-2012 - Full Topic

I hosted this league about 6 months ago with a $120M cap... this time we'll go with $110M.

There have been well over 900 players in MLB history who have appeared in just one game... think Moonlight Graham.  Baseballreference.com has that list of players with the years and dates of those games in their "Frivolities" section under Cups of Coffee.  I've played in various Coffee leagues here over the years and they're always fun to research.  This one will play out thusly:

We'll be using players who appeared in just one game from 1885-2012.  Select a player from the "Coffee" list and note the year, date & team of his one appearance.  Then go to that team's page (by year) and click on "Schedules & Results" to find out which team he appeared against on that date.  You can use both rosters for that year to make your team. Use any player that appears on either roster according to bbr.com, twisted to any season.  You can draft one $200-225K guy from any team for that year... he will be sent down to AAA.

There will be 6/2 below average AAA and depending on whether your Cup of Coffee guy was a pitcher or hitter, each team will call up one (and only one) AAA player and rename them to your Coffee guy's actual name.  Your Cup of Coffee AAA callup must remain on the big league roster all season and have at least 25IP or 50AB during the regular season for your team to qualify for the playoffs.

In doing research for this league, I found instances where 2 or more players had one appearance for the same team on the same date.  I'd like each team to be somewhat unique, so there will be no "identical" teams allowed.

When signing up, list your Coffee player's appearance date, year, team played for and team played against.  I will wait until 5 signups before I make my selection.

$110M salary cap
AAA - 6/2 below avg but only one may be called up
No WW, DH, clones, trades or live play
Injuries turned off
Use the stadium your Cup of Coffee guy played in
Random realignment

I know you say it has to be after 1918, but can I have an exception for Monte Pfeffer (actually spelled Pfeiffer, but he changed it since being a Jew in 1913 MLB probably wouldn't have worked out well for him), my great uncle, who played one game for the A's in 1913 against Walter Johnson and the Senators?

The reason I'm starting with 1918 is that's the first year bbr.com lists box scores and it's easy to verify each selection.  I don't have a huge problem if you'd like to use your great uncle's game in 1913... I'd just ask that you provide a link that shows the actual box score for that day.

My guy is Honey Barnes. April 20, 1926. NYY vs. Wash Sens.

Been waiting for this league to reappear.
I'd like to claim Radhames Dykhoff. (Not quite a household name.)
He gave up two runs in his only inning pitched in a 9-0 loss.
June 7, 1998 Atlanta vs Baltimore at Camden Yards.

We are not related.

Welcome fatboydad & dodgebob.

Interesting (to some) fact:

Radhames Dykhoff's cousin, Sydney Ponson, was also on the '98 Orioles team.
Utility man Gene Kingsale was on the same '98 roster.
Eight months after Dykhoff's cup of coffee, the Orioles signed Calvin Maduro

Those four are the only Aruba-born men to ever play in major league ball.

I'm in.  John LeRoy, extra inning appearance for the Braves vs. Mets at Shea, Sept 26 1997.
9/22/2012 7:22 PM

I'll take Irv Stein, who pitched 3 innings for the A's in their 13-3 Loss to the White Sox @ Shibe, July 7, 1932 in the 1st game of a doulble header.  Game took 1 hour and 53 Min.  They played two games that day in less than 4 hours.

Welcome dlchow & Drawdexer.
9/22/2012 10:24 PM
I'll get in with Adam Greenberg, Jul 9 2005 CHC @ Fla
9/23/2012 7:54 AM
Welcome JGreene.

I'm going with Ed Corey... 7/2/18 White Sox, played the Tigers @ Comiskey I.

It's been brought to my attention that boxscores aren't really necessary to access schedule information.  So... I'm going to open it up to all Cup of Coffee players from 1885 - 2011.  Team schedules by year can be found by clicking  "Schedules & Results" on the team page by year.  I have amended the rules accordingly.
9/23/2012 1:12 PM
I'm in.. team to be determined.
