Queens U (NC) 97, Incarnate Word 95 (OT): It took overtime, but young Queenswith only 3 upperclassmen proved they were King over the Incarnate Word Cardinal. This game was back and forth, with players on both teams in foul trouble. Queens was up 7 with 1:15 remaining in regulation, but only made 2 of 4 free throws and IW managed to make a trio of threes, the last coming by Ronald Cotner with 0:02 remaining to force OT. OT was tight throughout, with IW's Danny Hampton draining a 3 with 0:19 left to knot it at 95 each. IW Sr PG Michael Marlow fouls Ruben Fessler with 0:04 and Fessler makes both for the final margin. It's a shame either team had to lose this one (especially Incarnate Word).
This game likely locks up this year's Challenge in favor of the CVAC. With only 11 games this year, the Heartland needs a sweep from here on out to win.
St Edwards 86, Erskine 83: Funngun10 and St Edwards did their part for the Heartland, holding off fillthelane and Erksine in a contrast of styles. St Edwards led most of the way, stretching the lead out to 15 on a couple of occasions during the 2nd half. St Edwards made a living at the free throw stripe, going 36-of-46, versus Erskine's efficient but lower volume 12-of-14. St Edwards eschewed the three-ball, not attempting a single shot while Erskine bombed away at a 9-of-26 clip. Erskine made 3 treys during the last 0:30 to tighten it up but it wasn't enough. Clifford Nebel led an otherwise balanced attack with 23 for St Edwards. Andrew Wilson made 6 three-pointers and totalled 22 points in the losing effort.
CVAC 5, Heartland 3. Three games remaining tonight, all involving ranked teams. Heartland needs an unlikely sweep. Good Luck!!!
