Mike Trout turned 22 yesterday. Topic

This defense talk, and how to judge accurately, is way overrated in my opinion.    Judge with your eyes, listen to what the players themselves say.

In the of in terms of defense I want speed.

In the infield in terms of defense I want sure hands and smooth dp turning ability, less emphasis on "range" or whatever.

I judge defense by number of Maxim Top 100 women banged with no pregnancies.

Jeter is the all-time greatest.

hmm.  hard to argue.  willie wilson couldve given him a run for his money in the "women banged" dept. reportedly.  but not avoided preggos.  jeters defense is platinum caliber, forget gold glove.

It was also argued that the Angels would have missed the playoffs without Trout.

Oh, that's right, they missed them with him too!
They would have missed the playoffs with Cabrera (instead of Trout), too.

DWAR is indisputable proof of Trout's excellence when it helps bad luck's point, but when it doesn't, well then you need 3 years to get an accurate value of defensive worth.
Without using UZR a reasonable person could see that offensively, Trout was very close to Cabrera. Without UZR, you could also see, fairly easily, that Trout was more valuable on defense. Add in the 46 steals and it isn't even close.

I bet you'll be shocked when you read the results of last year's MVP vote.

The Angels were actually a game better than the Tigers if team performance matters to you.

HR       Avg      OBP       SLG      OPS+     SB      Better Defender
44       .330     .393       .606       164          5
30       .326     .399       .564       169         49                 X

Trout was more valuable in 2012.

I guess the voters don't subscribe to the "badluck is always right" theory.

miggy had a slightly better average and

14 more homers and 57 more rbi.  14, 57.

not to mention 62 more total bases and a world series appearance.

The HR are absolutely relevant. The RBI, not so much.

Those are full season numbers for an everyday middle infielder.  That is the margin by which Miggy eclipsed Trout in hrs and ribs.  Again, if Trout had played more games perhaps the numbers wouldve reflected differently.  Perhaps Trout would've hit subpar those 25 ish games he missed.  Perhaps he wouldve channelled Josh Gibson and approached Miggy slugging exploits given those 25 games back.  Both are reasonable.  Thing is with Miggy- there is no "perhaps".
