Didn't realize the Pirates would get this much attention...
Was looking at a bunch of options, obviously - and was hoping for Walter Johnson - I have no doubts that team will win 90+. Was mainly looking at committing to a 2nd Cubs team, thinking that there was plenty of pitching plus one team would go power with Wilson/Banks and the other team would go high average with Hack/Cuyler/Stephenson types. Was also looking at the Hornsby pick, since that's the ultimate wait and see. Seriously considered Mike Scott - since that would guarantee the only Astros franchise, which I was also surprised didn't get picked. Ultimately, I think that team would have fallen under the 110 Cap but you could do some damage to other teams, i.e. Wagner/Kent/Morgan maybe...
I went with the Pirates thinking that a deadball franchise would do better than a team with newer players. And also, I thought it could support two teams. There are 6 serviceable deadball pitchers plus Blanton plus two closers, two catchers, 2 SS, 2 3B plus plenty of OF/1B help. I chose Wagner over Babe Adams because I thought no one would want a Pirates team without it's best player, plus I could go Wagner then lose 2 SP to the other side, then pick 2 SP and walk away with the top hitter plus 600 deadball innings. I also went with Wagner because other owners went with Bench and Cobb, perhaps thinking the same thing...
My division has the Cards, Cubs and BoSox so, as always, hoping for .500
