Post-2000 rotation - missed division title by 1 Topic

By now we don't even have many forum posts about how hard it is or isn't to win with a "modern" pitching staff. Both the fact that a 3-man deadball era rotation is most likely dominant AND the fact that a well--constructed modern staff can do well (if in the right park, and despite the price constraints on a four- man staff) have been demonstrated over and over again.

I wanted to see if I could win with a four-man rotation of all post-2000 season. So far the results are mixed: the team is now 39-37, in second place 3 games back. The bullpen with one exception has not worked very well. The rotation however has, with only one pitcher of the four starters doing only okay and the other 3 very well I would say. The jury is still out.

The team plays in the Kingdome and the hitters were selected for it with emphasis on HR/100#, and OBP#. I would expect the ERAs to be lower in a pitcher's park.

I ww'd Johnny Bench and got Ted Simmons. I got fed up with Frank Howard also being unproductive and got Duke Snider to replace him.

Except for the usual WWing of 200K players those are  the only uses of the WW.

I may give this a roll in an OL league as well.  How much did you spend on your pitching staff?
7/14/2014 12:55 PM
Nice Job Prof, your team is inspirational and doing well. Hopefully something like this can establish new trends and some innovative thought.
7/14/2014 1:10 PM
nikospade, the total staff cost $42.8 mil, but the rotation was $34.4 mil. I would definitely not recommend going with my selections for the bullpen, as it is the weakest part of the team so far. But the starters have done well.
7/14/2014 4:49 PM
yeah i was going to find my own relievers.  I'm going to take 4 different starters as well.  I think my HR/9# numbers and K/9 is lower but my WHIP is higher I plan on using a different ballpark since my SP salary is a bit higher as well and I might not be able to afford home run salaries.

Here is an update. The team is now 46-42 - 1 game behind the division leader and 4 behind in the wildcard race.

The all-post 2000 rotation continues to perform pretty well, and the bullpen (which is not all "modern" is beginning to even out a bit, not great, but showing up at last:

good post, am surprised (very) that Kershaw is under performing to the degree he has, given his pedigree when compared to your other three starters.  not surprised with the pen; Nobody there I'd take, other than Wiltse given the park and his good Ip/9 figure.  The change to the switch hitter Simmons appears to be brilliant.  The longer I play, the more value I see in switch hitters.
7/17/2014 7:14 PM
Here is an update: The team is now 63-52, in first place one game ahead of a rival. Kershaw is no longer underperforming and has more or less caught up with the other starters' performance over time.

The situation is this: with four games to go, my Paris Commune team is one game behind the first place team which went on an ill-timed (for me) 10-game winning streak to take the division lead from us.

We have a four-game showdown with them starting at 6 pm EST (pm1 game) tonight. So the ultimate test of a four-man rotation of all post-2000 starters is now coming up. Can the "Fantastic Four" rise to the occasion?

This team has shown you can be competitive with such a rotation. Now it might show you can win a division with one. Plus we have learned that 1990 Cecil Fielder, 1970 Tony Conlgliaro, 1991 Willie Randolph and 1978 Ted Simmons are very useful players in OLs.

Here are the stats after 158 games - League MLB109490:

We lost the first of the four games and won the second in 13 innings.

Two games to go, we are one game back. Schmidt to pitch but he is down to 88%, with Verlander to pitch the deciding game on the last day of the season IF we win this pm1 game today. So I have put Kershaw who is at 100% on Setup A and he and Wiltse (90%) are the whole bullpen for this game.

If we win, Lowe should be at 100% and he and Wiltse will be the bullpen behind Verlander. Will we get to a decisive division winner-deciding last game?

Jason Schmidt  got us game 3 of the last series of the regular season against Lanny's fine team "Look and Feel Years Younger", with Kershaw in relief, 7-1. Derek Jeter drove in 3 runs with two doubles.

It is now all on the last game of the season, our teams are tied for first. One goes into the postseason, and one goes home. Verlander for us Dummy Taylor for them.

Baseball like it oughta be !

Well we lost that fourth game, the last of the season, and end up one game behind and out of the playoffs. But we went 91-71 with a rotation of all post.2000 pitchers.
