In New York you have to show if asked. Good job for following the law.
Why did he ask?   I was minding my own business, just standing around.

Should I have looted a store in protest?
I don't know why. But he's allowed to. Maybe he doesn't like fat guys.
Profiling?

And how the **** does a huge baseball fan go to NYC but not make it up to see the hall of fame?
The cluttered HOF doesn't interest me.   Trim that **** down to a manageable size.
Seriously. Otherwise you and everyone else will start watching soccer instead of baseball.

Maybe a doughnut shop got knocked over or he knew you were once an illegal steroid user.
I'll give you the answer.

I was a young man with long hair, an earring and muscled up from 'roid use.   I was standing in a dimly lit alley.    His objective was to A) find out if I was doing anything illegal or B) make sure I knew that he knew I was there.

I wasn't doing anything illegal by my look and location put me on his radar.   I could have ran or I could have acted like a dick.    I did neither and he was not compelled to shoot me.   Good thing I wasn't black or I wouldn't be typing this now, right?

He was sitting on a bench minding his own business waiting for his kids to get out of preschool, according to the mall surveillance video. It's why all charges were dropped. At least he didn't get charged with bleeding on the officers uniforms.
Oh boo hoo. Cry me a river. He was simply asked to show ID. Hopefully he's learned to show some respect next time.
Hey that's fine. But when he politely refused the cop needs to know he's not required to show it. Not escalate the situation and tase him.
Was the cop brought up on charges? If not then i have to assume he did nothing outside the law. You or I don't know all the facts and a case getting dropped can be for all sorts of reasons - only one of which is innocence.

I agree the cop probably didn't need to escalate the situation... On the other hand the idiot on the bench could have avoided the problem all together. He chose to be disrespectful. I have zero sympathy for that.

Again, making sure we don't offend the police is not our job.

You handed over your ID because the law required it. Had he also asked to search your car, you could have legally refused. Him tasing and arresting you for that refusal would be outrageous.

How did miket know the law required it? I don't know half the laws in IL and I've lived here for 20+ years. I'm not an Atty. I think you are making an assumption there. Mike, can you clarify?

He politely declined. Which was within his right living in Minnesota.
Lol....

Politely declined.... As in "I don't need to show you my ID you racist pig"?

Reminds me of ADClay.... "Hey doc.... I'm having a hard time making friends... You f*ing c*cksucker"

I have no idea if mike knew the law or not. That's not the point. Had he refused the cop would have told him that state law required it. Had he been in MN and refused, getting shot with a taser and arrested would not be an acceptable response from the police, even if he had been a dick.

I don't know the laws for any state wrt ID requests.   I handed it to him because I wasn't doing anything illegal.
