Frank Wilson wouldn't be a bad player this year if we needed him, but d-line is very crowded with non-seniors, so he'll likely redshirt. His overall rating is deflated a bit by his low hands rating (which doesn't matter in DL's), but he's a great tackler with good strength, acceptable technique, and high potential.

Potential: "With your coaching, I think his game has a lot of room to grow."

LB was a big need this time around, as we're graduating four senior LB's after this season. We got two, and while they're both about equal in terms of talent, David Brown may redshirt because of his higher potential. He's a run-stopper with good speed, and while his game instinct and semi-low work ethic are both concerns, neither are deal-breakers.

Jesus Mendez is a great athlete with some smarts to him, although I really wish his tackling/strength scores were higher. His potential isn't great, but it's not terrible, and he WAS a very cheap signing.

Potential: "I think his growth potential is pretty average - nothing special."

I got in a big recruiting war with Quincy for Larry Jefferson, one I engaged in because the local DB pool was pretty poor. Jefferson may redshirt (the last one goes to him or Allen), but it isn't for a lack of talent. He's a strong athlete with solid ratings across the board, and his high work ethic ensures he'll reach his potential pretty fast.

Potential: "I think his growth potential is pretty average - nothing special."

Thanks, realist! Much appreciated.

Our recruiting class was ranked 18th by this season's GUESS Reports, which seems about right. I've redshirted Wall, Wilson, and Brown (the last of whom the GUESS Reports were NOT kind to), and it seems like we'll be alright this year. We have a lot of guys coming back from last year, and I'm optimistic that we can get back to the playoffs again this season.

Though rankings this early in the season (at this point, three games in) are screwy, it should be noted we're #1 in both the Press and Coaches' Polls after a 3-0 start. Only one win was over a human-coached team, but it was a quality win over a good Central Arkansas team. We finish our non-league slate with two tough games at Kentucky State and at home against #2 Slippery Rock.

As I sort of anticipated, we got crushed by Slippery Rock (though we did beat Kentucky State and finished non-league play at 4-1). The road wins over Central Arkansas and Kentucky State will look good at the end of the year, and while we're not quite one of the upper-echelon teams in D2, we've got a chance to make some noise.

An update, as we earned a pretty important 30-19 win at Central Missouri State. With that win, we can probably lose to Cheyney and still make the playoffs as long as we don't shoot ourselves in the foot elsewhere.

Another update, another huge win, this time a 34-31 squeaker over then-#19 Cheyney. We've clinched a spot in the MIAA title game against Central Missouri State, and if we win out, we're probably a 2-seed in the tournament. There exists a slim chance we could be a 1-seed, but we'd need a pretty huge upset to happen for that to be the case.

We won our second conference title in three seasons today, topping CMSU 33-23. As a result, we got a 2-seed in the tournament, which is what I figured we'd get. First up is 7-seed Edinboro, and here's a quick and dirty profile.

Team link: HERE
Head coach: heelsfan (fourth season)
Record: 10-3
WIS/Press: #27
Coaches: #28

heelsfan has several GD teams and boasts a heck of a resume in Warner, having taken UNC to a Rose Bowl many seasons ago. This is the third straight NT appearance for Edinboro, who plays in the most loaded D2 conference in Warner. Their three losses are to prohibitive championship favorite Slippery Rock and NT teams Millersville and Indiana (PA), and it's very safe to assume they'd be a higher seed if they played in a less demanding league.

They're a balanced team that can pass and run effectively, and in truth, they remind me a lot of the team I coach. WIS has installed Edinboro as 6 1/2-point favorites despite the seed differential, and even though we've played very well against quality teams (we have five wins over teams in WIS's top 35), I wouldn't be shocked if we got beat here.
11/18/2014 3:35 PM
In other headlines, kicker Randy Wilson was a third-team All-American, while running back Carl Morris was an honorable mention and was fifth in the Player of the Year voting (behind four other running backs!).
11/18/2014 3:57 PM
We lost 27-3. We got picked off at the 1-yard line in the first half and never threatened again. Kudos to heelfan for an awesome defensive gameplan; our team had a very good year, but we lost to an under-seeded team that could make serious noise. Senior retrospectives are forthcoming.

Jason Richardson was almost like the Alex Smith of my team. He was a very competent game manager who improved considerably in his second year as a starter, but he was never going to be the reason I won games. That showed in the playoffs, as he laid an egg against Edinboro. He was a GOOD quarterback, but there shouldn't be much of a dropoff going forward.

Carl Morris's stats look great, and while he had a very, VERY strong year, he did fumble a lot (we averaged about a fumble a game). Still, he had a very strong year and surpassed my expectations. I give a lot of credit to our o-line, but still, Morris turned out to be a very good starter.
