Giancarlo Stanton - More Money than God Topic

Any thoughts on the monster contract Stanton got?  My thinking is the 25 million a year is probably in line, but for 13 years seems insane.  I read where he has an opt out clause after 6 years, but if he is hitting .270 with 20 homers at that point, he can stick around and get the entire contract and not worry about having to "re-up".

To me, Miami went way overboard on this deal.  They probably would be better off trading him while his stock is so high and getting even more young talent.

It's probably less than he would have gotten on the open market because he's still so young.

Nothing really compares to this deal but Trout's extension pays him something like $33 million a year from 2018-2020 and he signed it 4 years before free agency.

Agreed.  I think the 13 years is where they went crazy.  Would he really have turned down 8 years and say 200 million?  If he had, then you trade him and get a ton back in return anyway.

They'll trade him.  Don't worry over that.

Will depend on how he plays.  If he becomes an average player, nobody will want to absorb that contract.

I can imagine the Cardinals would have been willing to give up a lot of talent to get Stanton.  That's the direction I would have gone before even offering him anything.  He is a good player, but not this good.

Are you tryin to tell me that Jesus Christ couldn't hit a curve ball?

They'll trade him before he becomes average.   And you still have teams like the Yanks/Angels who'll take that chance on catching lightning in a bottle.   Pretty sure the Yanks are still paying Soriano and Wells.   And I believe the Angels traded Wells and a bucket of cash to the Yanks.

He has a complete no-trade. Marlins could always trade off everything and force him to want to leave.

Yep. The only way the Marlins get out of this deal is if the market heats up even more and Stanyon opts out.

Yeah, no one with a no-trade clause has ever been moved.

True, but they can't dump him wherever they want like they did with Reyes and Buehrle.

Did I write anything remotely close to that?

Might want that prescription checked.
