Conference Games of the Day

8/03 :  Concord 61 - Alderson-Broaddus 62 (OT)
Close game that ended in brutal fashion for Concord.  Concord nailed a short jumper for a 61-59 lead with 26 seconds left in OT.  ABC was fouled with 12 seconds left and made one of two FTs but got the offensive rebound.   ABC was then fouled again with 4 seconds left and nailed both FTs to win the game by one.   ABC dominated the offensive boards collecting 13 big second chances.

8/04 :  #15 Salem International 88 - Charleston 81
In just 7 seasons, the once 6-21 Salem squad is now whipping the old masters of the conference.  Salem took a 4 point half-time lead and built it to 16 point with 7 minutes left in the game before Charleston put together a closing run to pull within 3 with a little over a minute left in the game.   But Salem kept nailing FT after FT to keep the lead and secure the win.   The teams combined to make 57-71 FTs.   I'm sure there were some tired elbows after the game.

8/05 :  Charleston 51 - #1 W. Virginia St. 62
WVA St. pounded the paint early, scoring 24 of their 36 points from the paint to build an 11 point half-time lead.   Charleston kept nipping away in the 2nd half but could never generate enough consistent offense to pose a serious threat.    The WVA St. bench dominated this game, outscoring Charleston 30-12.

8/06 :  #15 Davis and Elkins 50 - Glenville St. 55
The upset of the season as Glenville St. picked up their 2nd conference win over 1st place D&E.  D&E did not get a night sleep apparently, shooting 37% from the floor, 50% from the FT line, and committing 13 TOs.    D&E still had a shot at the end, down by 2 with 20 seconds left but Glenville was able to seal the deal at the FT line.

8/07 :  Ohio Valley 58 - Charleston 57 (OT)
This could have been viewed as an elimination match between two NT bubble teams.   Charleston had a 3 point lead and the ball with 46 seconds left but missed a jumper and allowed OV to bury a three with 4 seconds left in the game.  Charleston got another chance down by one with 12 seconds left in OT but Joshua Person clanked a shot from in close.    This may be back to back years that Charleston misses the NT.   Unheard of in WVIAC territory.

8/08 :  Alderson-Broaddus 68 - #13 Davis and Elkins 76
The division title came down to last night at D&E.   D&E came out in the 2nd half with a 33-31 lead.   Both teams looked sharp and ABC looked like they may seize control when George Ikner sank a fadeaway with 12:29 left for a 50-45 lead.   That must have been a wake-up call because D&E stormed back to take control of the game from that point forward.   D&E displayed balanced scoring as 4 of the 5 starters scored in double digits.

8/09 :  #10 Davis and Elkins 64 - #14 Salem International 62
Salem built a nice 13 point half-time lead and looked like they were on their way to a share of the division title.   Apparently the locker room celebration was a bit too much as they played their worst half of the year and lost by 2.   Highlights (lowlights?) include 2-10 from the FT line  (really!!!???),  10 personal fouls, 6 TOs, and got outrebounded 21-12.

8/10 :  Shepherd 85 - Fairmont St. 94 (OT)

8/11 :  Alderson-Broaddus 63 - Concord 65
Concord relied on stiff defense and 51% shooting to squeak out the win vs ABC.   ABC built as much as an 8 point lead in the 2nd half but could not shake Concord.   The game came down to the wire with ABC in possession, down by 3 with 25 seconds left.    But they could not get off a shot and Concord wisely fouled them with 4 seconds left to prevent them from attempting a game tying three pointer.

Predictions!

Mully Nailed it :
D&E,  Ohio Valley, Charleston, W Liberty

Not Bad Mullman
Fairmont, W. VA St., Salem, Shepherd

Boy You Blew That One!
(Basically the entire North Division)
Bluefield - Haasdr sandbagging as usual in the pre-season claiming he can't get 7 wins out of this bunch.    Well we showed you!!
ABC - What looked like a magical season ended with a 4 game losing streak.   Still exceeded expectations.
Concord - took a while for new coach to get used to this power conference,  but a 6-1 finish in conference play has them looking strong.
Glenville - Definitely not one of the best teams,  but I really thought they could scrape out more than 2 wins.

Regular Season Awards

Coach of the year:  mullycj
Mully guided W. Virginia St. to a 13-3 conference record which was a 4 game improvement over the previous season.    The roster was split evenly between upper and lower classmen, giving them hope that the future will be bright as well.   The Jackets dominate the 3 point line averaging 11% higher than their opponents.   An 11 point win at D&E was a deciding factor in the balloting.  This is mullycj 1st Human COY award.

Player of the year : Chisulo Abdula
Chisulo led Shepherd to a 8-8 conference record while averaging 17.1 ppg and 8.1 rebounds per game.   He scored +20 points in 7 conference games.  If that wasn't enough, he is also a dominant defensive player (98 Def) and averages 1.5 blocks per game.   In fact, his ratings are so disgusting I am considering changing the award to USA Player of the year for next season.  Chisulo is only a JR.

Congrats to both!
