Lose to Kingston in the semis last year, and now I have to see them again in the group stage
Imagine how the other two teams in Group A feel...

The opening contest has now gone final as the FC Dynasty Cup XIII standings finally get rid of all the zeros. Brighton AFC played host to Aurea Cruce Aquilonis out of Group G in a game worthy of the opening match.

The sold-out crowd of 45,000 got the party started in the 14th minute when midfielder Roogan Foote received a corner kick and headed it into the goal off the far post to give the home side the early 1-0 lead. The advantage became 2-0 when Ned McNaughton went unassisted and knuckled a ball off the side of his foot a couple of minutes past the hour mark, prompting the Brighton fans to start chanting.

Those came to a quick halt as Adilson Leite scored the first of his two goals with a diving header that cut the lead in half. The crowd then was completely silenced when Leite, beating an offsides trap, easily beat Brighton goalie Ethan MacGraw in the 84th minute to tie the game at 2-2. It was that 2nd goal that seemed to light a fire under Brighton, who re-established control and completely dominated the final minutes, winning three corners and a free kick before time ran out to make Aquilonis pay. Right before regular time expired, Eadburt Pellyn scored off a corner and then Templeton Jaramillo closed out the game in extra time with a goal of his own as a 2-2 tie quickly turned into a 4-2 Brighton triumph.

Group H gets underway tomorrow and then the tournament really starts to heat up on the 9th.

Today's matchup is between The Cup VII and IX Champions Fighting Ants, now rebuilt for another stretch of excellence and FC Trojans of SC, who have been dominating USA World 62 play for the past couple of years.

Game time is at noon.

The 11/8 game was one of those high-scoring affairs you don't often see in Cup games because of the quality of the teams. However, this afternoon, both defenses decided to take the day off. Fighting Ants CF Vincente Ocampo went bonkers in the first 12 minutes, scoring a hat trick before some of the home crowd had even gotten to their seats. In a 5 minute span, Ocampo headed in three crosses. The rout looked to be on when Lukasz Grabowska added a goal in the 25th minute to give the Ants a commanding 4-0 lead.

But, FC Trojans of SC had a goal-happy forward of their own in Dahal Corner, who scored two goals en route to his own hat trick in the 29th and 38th minutes. Coupled with a Damien Mullarkey blast in the 41st, the Trojans were able to close to 4-3 by halftime to make it a game again.

Ultimately, it was too much Ants in the second half as four players each contributed a goal. The Trojans did manage a couple of tallies of their own but fell 7-5 in a highly entertaining opening match for Group H play. One bright spot in a loss for the Trojans is the whopping 5 away goals, which will go a long way to winning any tiebreaker scenario.

A lot of games tomorrow.

Today's update will be broken into two segments with the am games now complete and the pm games updating this evening after 7pm.

The morning action had another 10+ goal scoring game...maybe that's going to be the signature for Cup XIII. Group C opened up with FC Cackalacky hosting kangaroo fc in front of 60,000 fans. The Croatian side immediately drew blood when Anderson Mestanza found himself open in front of goal in the 3rd minute and guided a shot past Cackalacky goalie Rudolf Hofstetter...and the scoring continued. Five different kangaroo players contributed for a total of six goals. Cackalacky was able to minimize the differential damage thanks to a pair of scores by Swiss midfielder Yvon Bise and a couple of additional scores right at the end of the match to make the final a 6-4 roos victory. Those six away goals are going to be huge for the roos.

In Group G, Aurea Cruce Aquilonis took another loss in as many days, this time 4-1 at the hands of North Polar Dragons FC. A leading contender for the all-name team, Jooseppi Muschkatenblieth scored in the 35th minute when Aquilonis goalie Ludwika Dudek, distracted by the 16 letters on the back of the jersey, was out of position to cover Muschkatenblieth's header that opened the scoring for the visitors. A couple of goals later in the 2nd half by Zakary Walls sealed the deal for the Dragons. Aquilonis better pick up some points in their next game or their tournament is going to be a short one.

The final two games in the morning slate were the first ties of the tournament. Futbol Club Oviedo and Rushmore FC, both former Cup Champions, played to a defensive-minded 1-1 draw in Group E. Oviedo's Romeo Gimenez scored very early off a corner as the ball hit the ground and Rushmore goalie Aldo Bucci lost track of its location. Rushmore then drew level in the 29th minute after a rare penalty kick was awarded. For whatever reason, Cannavaro Maccarone decided to head the ball into the net after the referee placed the ball on the spot. It worked so his choice of penalty kick technique can't be questioned too much.

Fianna AFC and Space Olympics also played to a draw in Group D, this one ending 3-3. English forward Edrik Askew scored twice for Olympics but the home side was able to equalize in the 84th minute when fellow countryman Cowal Chernock earned Fianna the point after his header rolled just inside the far post. The game was close the entire match so a tie was a just result that neither side was completely satisfied with.

More tonight...

The evening games gave gone final with the first rout of the tournament. My own Fußball-Club Köln 01/07 e. V. played cannon fodder to Metropolitan Screaming Eagles, who won 4-0 to start Group B action. To add insult to injury, not only was my squad dominated on the scoreboard and in the stats book, the Köln defense was beaten twice by Austrian Gunther Assmann. He almost scored a hat trick but a cross in the 11th minute that found the head of Assmann sailed just wide.

The return game between Space Olympics and Fianna AFC was also played today as both teams jumped on a plane after their morning contest went final to fly to France. Olympics clearly had the worse jetlag despite having the home field as Donte Mina scored in the opening minute unassisted. The Irish side added two more goals before halftime and then coasted in the 2nd stanza to take the 3-0 win, giving Fianna the early advantage in Group D.

The other two games both came out of Group A, where FC Kingston had a successful first step in its bid to repeat. Playing a team that had never participated in the Cup before, it was hard to know what to expect from the matchup. The Champs were challenged as Bad News made an excellent showing...level on the stat sheet and on the scoreboard at 1-1 for halftime. Kingston opened up the game during the 2nd half by scoring twice to take a 3-1 win but the game served notice that Bad News has come to play.

The game between the crutchanators of soccer and Club de Fútbol Deportivo Cotopaxi was also highly competitive, as these two veteran clubs traded blows. Heinz Hagelin scored twice for the crutchanators and Sceley Ballouchy tallied twice for Cotopaxi. The game ended up hinging on Ballouchy's penalty shot, the 2nd penalty awarded in this tournament. That proved to be the winning margin as Cotopaxi went on the road in a difficult venue and came away with a 3-2 win and all three points.

See you in the morning and keep scheduling

There was one more game...the final group to start play was Group F, where VB Hibernian hosted Bordeaux Fighting Bovines. The Cattle had a tough time from the 5 minute mark onward. They took the lead in minute 4 when Huenu Barragan weaved his way through the Hibs defense and sent a shot into the back of the net. Beyond that highlight, it was all Hibernian. Veteran defender Caldre Berkeley scored twice and Hibs generated 30 opportunities versus Bordeaux' 13, so it's probably fitting that the score ended up a 3-1 Hibernian victory.

At first glance, there are 8 games tomorrow.

Morning update will be around 9am Central. There are a carzy amount of games over the next three days!

Only two of the games were morning contests with most of the action today happening in the afternoon. Der Kaiserlich-Österreichische Hodensack and Southeast Indiana Football Club locked horns in Austria. 30,767 fans witnessed a fairly boring affair as the home side got on the board first when Derrick Alvin painted the far corner in the 16th minute to give Hodensack the 1-0 lead. That was answered eventually by Indiana's lone goal with about 20 left in the game when Isai Maudit scored off a corner cross. The 1-1 draw makes the Group E standings look funny as all four teams have identical 0-0-1 records that are the result of 1-1 draws. That'll change soon enough.

In Group H, Fighting Ants established themselves as a strong contender to advance as they win their 2nd game in a row, this time a 3-1 win over Real TK. The Ants dominated the stat sheet and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 25 minutes, highlighted by Vincente Ocampo's 4th goal of the tournament in the 25th minute. The tally places him in the early lead for the L'Orteil D'or. TK's Buinton Montuano minimized the damage by scoring in the 34th minute and changed the momentum of the game enough so that the 2nd half went scoreless.

Tonight's update will be at 7pm.

A whopping 6 games in the pm so let's get at it.

Aurea Cruce Aquilonis heeded the warning and played much better their third time out, this time against butterfiles united in Group G play. Controlling the game from the beginning, Aquilonis grabbed the lead in the 6th minute and never let it go. Every time butterfiles scored, Aquilonis was able to respond quickly to keep the pressure on. Adilson Leite scored his 3rd goal and Ronaldo Moniz added a pair as they took all three much needed points in a 4-3 win. Lucila Astol scored twice for butterfiles in the losing effort.

VB Hibernian made it 2-for-2 as they dispatched FC Not Very Athletic 4-1 in Athletic's Group F opener. Athletic generated more opportunities during the game but was only able to convert in the 82nd minute when Zackary Illescas erased the goose egg on a header so well struck, Hibs goalie Dema Rowe didn't even bother to move. Argentinian Manque Montaner channeled his inner Maradona, scoring twice for the winning side. In another 4-1 final, The Shield of the Cow opened its tournament with a dominating performance over FC Cackalacky in Group C. Perennial scorer Halbert Labazares scored twice in the winning effort for The Cow as he chases another Golden Toe award. Cackalacky's Gabriele Abderhalden was able to get his team on the scoreboard with minutes left in the game to allow the visitors to leave with something to show for their efforts.

Another dominating team this evening was Futbol Club Oviedo, as they crushed Southeast Indiana Football Club 5-1 at home in Group E. Four different players scored for Oviedo, led by a pair of goals by forward Stanhope Edmund. The Spanish side had 25 opportunities, 12 shots on goal and 10 corners...and did all of this playing half of the game a man down or the final score might have been ugly. Indiana got its lone tally in the 66th minute when Vernon Anunciacion finally cashed in on their 11-on-10 advantage but it was far too little to make a difference.

The final two games were a pair of 1-1 draws. Kobelco United Football Club and Metropolitan Screaming Eagles played a tough but clean game in Group B. No bookings were recorded and both teams scored between the 70th and 74th minutes, showing just how evenly matched both teams were this night. The other draw was between Fianna AFC and Arsenal F.C. in Group D as Fianna stretched its unbeaten streak to three games with one win and two ties. Fianna looked like they might have taken all three points until Arsenal defender Abel Rimando pushed forward and struck a ball like a forward in the 75th minute to split the points.

A ton of games tomorrow as we get closer to the heart of the schedule.
