RTG, schwarze and I have started looking at themes.

I think I'd like to use a version of my Immaculate Grid league, but I think that's a R2 theme. Based on the moaning from those who entered teams, anyway. :)

Tilting at windmills here, I know, but in general I dislike draft themes in the WISC (and they're the main reason I've dropped out of round 2 on two separate occasions after qualifying). But more than that I really really really dislike draft themes that confer any draft-order advantage based on round 1 performance. Performing well in round 1 is already amply rewarded in my opinion because the scores carry over (albeit with half the weight of round 2). There is no need to provide a further advantage. It would be better, again IMO, if any draft orders were random.

Traditionally, we have done one R2 draft, but I can't recall if it's been every year or not. I happen to enjoy drafts and think they're at least representative of part of the skill set owners develop here. But your point about R1 standings is valid. If anything, the #24 team should get a first pick, but random is always fair, too.

Just my two cents and many may disagree. I have only been in a couple of the leagues and completely applaud the efforts of red, schwarze, and others who run those tourneys....can only imagine how much work that is. Thank you.

A variety of themes pose challenges and allow owners to truly stretch so we can truly get bragging rights if they Win. Of course, many veterans have developed tools over time, as well as familiarity to the database that are clearly an advantage and serve as a payback to their hard work and time invested. All Good and Fair. I was fortunate to advance a few rounds in both....not sure how but I did. :)

The only point I brought up and it is just based on philosophy, both perspectives are correct but they do differ as the rounds advance. I suggested we randomly determine the "team draft order" each time. Luck always comes into play but the best should be able to overcome and still Win. There was disagreement in that some felt the teams who performed the best in Round 1 should get the reward of earlier team picks in the next round, etc. In my opinion, each round should be independent. Otherwise the best team in the 1st round, gets an earlier choice in round 2, (theoretically better).

Valid points all. I'd be fine with randomizing draft order.

I love drafts and I believe it’s important to have one in the second round. I’m good with randomization in terms of draft order, but I’m also a fan of many of schwarze’s draft types where draft order for rounds are based on salary.

I like barracuda’s idea but prefer the variation he outlines in the ps.

2.) Gold glove or silver slugger league. Every position player on your roster must have won the gold glove or silver slugger in the season you chose. Pitchers must be from 1957-2023 (the gold glove era), but do not need to have won the gold glove.

A fun play on this one would be to make people choose. Either a full GG team or a full SS team.

I played in a fun league that was similar to this. Random assignment, 12 of each type of team, either Gold Gloves or Stone Hands.

Gold Gloves teams:
1. Each player must be rated B or higher for fielding AND range in at least one position.
2. 1B factor for the park must be +1 or higher.

Stone Hands teams:
1. Each player must be rated C or lower for fielding AND range at every position.
2. 1B factor for the park must be -1 or lower.

All teams:
No restrictions on catcher arm but field and range have to stay in the guidelines.
No restrictions on P field and range.

I will also volunteer to be a commissioner in round 1.

I’m good with whatever themes - I prefer research that involves Wis - having to go off site to research isn’t as fun for me. But I am one person.

one of my favorite WISC themes was you either had to pick deadball pitchers and modern hitters or modern pitchers and deadball hitters. Was a lot of fun and was challenging with the many options available.

I have an idea for a league:

Choose a period of five consecutive years. Draft one player from each of those years. Then choose four more periods of five consecutive years, and draft one player from each of those years. Each period must be at least ten years apart, or fifteen years if you want a higher cap. I call the Five Quintets league It would force owners to select players from many different eras.

I'll say that my favorite theme from last season was the $160M, pick from column A or column B. It really added another layer of strategy, a game within a game.

I haven't really tested this idea out, but another stray idea that seemed kind of fun (if it hasn't been done before) is a bookend teammate chain.

Pick one hitter and one batter who each played a minimum of 12 seasons. Complete your roster by building 2 teammate chains where your chosen player is both the first and last player in the chain.

For example, let's say my pitcher was Nolan Ryan. I might start with '69 Nolan Ryan, then twist his teammate Tom Seaver to '71, than twist his teammate Ken Singleton to '73...like any teammate chain, except the last player in the chain would also have to be Nolan Ryan. So I could keep building a chain until I finished with '91 Nolan Ryan, say.

This league would allow exactly 2 clones–2 of your chosen hitter, 2 of your chosen pitcher–but no clones otherwise.

I would imagine using Baseball Reference would be ok. If you wanted to use twist Ken Singleton's teammate Tony Scott to his '77 season, that would be ok even though '73 Tony Scott doesn't qualify for the WIS database.

Sounds like a good challenge in my head, but I never really build theme leagues so who knows

I expect one theme to have a franchise component, though nothing is settled yet. I do think the key is to represent different types of builds without making anything so complex that it drives people away. It's possible to be simple without being easy.
