Capital Athletic Conference: Year 12-pres Topic

Thanks as always, France. On the plus side, Leet's 1 SPD is "sky's the limit", so it might end up at 10...

"Simpson...I like the cut of his jib." Good stuff, France.

My team has more talented players this season, but they are mostly just scorers. The 3 seniors from last season were not flashy, but they filled in all of the cracks for Hood, like utility infielders and middle relievers. I need a couple of those guys. Either the SG with REB and ST or a PF with a flatter profile and ST.

Andrew, when you say, "There probably isn't enough ATL to make a real NT run," - are you saying I likely won't win any games in the NT, or are you saying I likely won't even make the NT?

And then to clarify, I actually redshirted one of my senior 95+ rebounders, so I only have one graduating and two returning. I'm trying to uneven out my class sizes and consolidate down to 2 or 3 years of Seniors and Juniors. Same reason I left the scholly unfilled - to help with the unevening of class sizes. Because after missing the NT for six seasons so far, I've realized this South division is just way way way too brutal to compete at a C- prestige. I think this is probably my best chance of starting the virtuous cycle of winning some games, getting my prestige up a bit, recruiting better players, winning some more games, etc.
1/20/2011 9:50 PM
he meant "make a run once you get to the NT". otherwise, you are all on the right track. prestige is king, as is eventual class evenness, but you have put yourself in a good position going forward. nicely done. (nc2457829305)

Magneto, hadn't noticed the RS.  Interesting stuff.
Wrono is right on the other comment.  Much like his and my SPD will limit our tourney runs, you'd have to get some fortunate matchups to get too far with that ATH.

The formula speaks!  It shares my skepticism at getting enough W's to get CUA into the dance...
I don't have a South/North balance adjustment which would matter this year.

10-8, RPI 49.  Yuck.  The bad news is that the two impact players on this team are SRs.  The really bad news is that while Cutts and the Jessie/Khan pairing are passable, there is no apparent future impact player on this roster.  Worth noting is the poor ST of the bigs (necessitating carrying 5 on the active roster) and the good BLK and REB of the returning starters for next year.  The FR are, at least, interesting.  Burton hopes to skate by with his SPD/ATH combo; he's high in PE/P, so he should be able to get to Hollon levels in a year or two.  Krouse ("I can hear you!") was brought in for his ability to immediately contribute with his 60+ PE and P.  He doesn't have much upside, only BH coming in high.  Todd Spears, on top of his obvious attributes as a big man, has a nice WE to help him out.  His ST hasn't improved as much as some would hope, given the role he plays.

16-2, RPI 6, ranked #8.  Make no mistake, this team was designed for a run this year, and a run it will make.  There is enough SPD/ATH here to make eyetest take note, even.  Two 90/90 bigs and solid BH/P make for a formidible squad to handle on the boards or the TO margin.  The future looks ok in the front court with Venegas progressing nicely and English sticking around for one more.  The FR G's look ok to help a nice front line to the tourney; there should be room for a line about what good does it do you to have a phone call and high potential PE, Mr Anderson, if you can even hear?  But that would be just tacky.

2-17, RPI 205.  Salisbury's fate this year is the biproduct of aggressive scheduling and bad luck.  If you look at their recorded TO differential, REB differential, and even point differential, you'd imagine a team a couple of games under .500, not wallowing with only 2 W's.  The sum of the parts is not tourney quality, but certainly able to win against tourney teams.  Sure, it lacks a second +70 REB and second guy with +50 SPD and PE, but there is good team speed and defensive ratings.  Looking to next year, I like the Trollinger/Oyola backcourt, Murphy SF, and can believe that Stone with one of the FR bigs will work as a nice starting 5.  Griffin is deficient on SPD/BH/P but it is that skill set improvement that seems blaked into his profile.  Mayes is probably the big to hold hope for since Gravley's ATH/SPD prognosis is... well... grave.  Cecil has picked up enough REB and LP this year to wishcast a brighter future than merely a Sideshow clown.

8-10, RPI 77.  Another year, another run at the PIT.  Every year, it seems Koop just needs a couple of W's to sneak into the PIT, only to fall apare in the 2nd half of the conference season.  In all honesty, this is a slightly overperforming squad to date, which is nice since there are only 2 SRs.  Among the returning scholarship players, you have to love Grimaldi's profile and improvement pattern, as well as Hannah (90+ REB and BLK).  RS Ricketts doesn't do enough of any of the big skills for my taste.  The FR have nice starting ratings, but only Deaton's improvements to date really jump out.  No word if the two FR Grimsleys are related.

15-3, RPI 8, Ranked #11.  To do this with only 2 JRs and 2 SRs shows how good rusticity is.  Sophomore G Callaway is quite the scorer, on pace to beat Leon Stephens' pretty fresh career scoring mark and has proven he can battle with any of the other big conference G's.  Teamed with the more athletic and PE increasing Watson and ATH/SPD/PE/P green FR Father Murphy, the MW backcourt is set for the next few seasons.  The FR bigs all look promising, with Moses the one most likely to lead MW to the promised land.

16-3, RPI 5, ranked #7.  Kind of a fun team to look over.  In a lot of ratings, it doesn't look so impressive, but as a whole it surpasses the sum of its parts.  Barnhardt/Toomer/Brown score a ton, with Toomer's monster LP making big + D's a problem.  They dominate the boards (with healthy doses of ATH and REB) and don't lose the TO battle too badly despite no P rating over 60.  RS FR Leet sticks out for his low SPD (up from 1) when the 2nd lowest is 25 points higher.  That one is Marty "Pasta" Gemmill who looks high in SPD, REB and LP.  His offseason improvements will be the key to him getting to NT levels of REB.  The last FR, Larry Becker (played by Ted Danson), is a generic pass first PG who perhaps will score in the new engine with an ATH slightly better than most of his ilk.
