There was a very strong correlation in 5.0 league between $ spent on DEF, and points allowed per game. This should not be a surprise. The biggest exceptions were the North Fork Express, who spent the 12th-15th most on DEF (the commonly used 1990 Browns), but was an excellent 3rd in fewest PTS. NF Express allowed few yds per pass and had many INTs. Somehow.
Sixth best DEF in PPG was the Bucket Drum Buskers, who incredibly spend the 3rd LEAST amount on DEF. They held teams to very poor pass completion % despite a poor pass rating. No wonder that team won so many games.
The last (reverse) exception was the hard-luck MVP front runners, who although they had a fine Pass D in theory, turned into a sieve. Many many teams in regular leagues have used the 1983 Cardinals D with success, but in this league, that D was snake-bit.

Lastly, the the correlation between cost of D and PPG allowed is even stronger if the Red Zone rating is accounted for Bigger Red Zone rating = more pts allowed. 5 rating points in Red Zone meant about 10 pts (1 TD and 1 FG) over the course of the season.
