I believe the 1978 Yankees, who trailed the Red Sox by as many as 14 games, hold the record for biggest comeback en route to a pennant.

The current season of Random Captain had a team nearly top that, as they were 16 back after 114 games:

Not sure the 78 Yankees hold the record...and I guess it depends on how you define it...for example, after the games of July 4th, 1914, the Braves were 15 games behind the Giants:
Events of Saturday, July 4, 1914 (retrosheet.org)

In any case, both the 78 Yankees, and the example above, are still incredible stories.

Yeah, there are different ways to define it, but maybe the 1914 Braves deserve the title for Greatest Comeback when you consider:

a) how bad they were the previous season (69-82)
b) the fact they won by 10.5 games after being down those 15!

Also in the running, the 1951 Giants who were "only" 13 games back on 8/11/51 and went 39-8 the rest of the way...

Red Sox fans are still bitter about that...:-)

The Yankees were 14 games back on July 18.

They won that magnificent one-game playoff at Fenway - which Tom Boswell thought the greatest game ever played. And don't forget the Boston Massacre on September 7-10 when the Yankees swept the Sox by a combined score of 42-9 in four straight. Great season. Still, all honor to the 1951 Bobby Thomson home run Giants and to the 1914 Miracle Braves.
