88 Mets as a base team gave me a whole staff I could have taken. Cone and Fernandez give me 2 power arms and Myers will close. Strawberry and McReynolds will be my corner outfielders with power. Had to take Magadan at 2 million as backup 1b because my cheapest 1b Squires from 78 Chisox was daggered. He will mostly ph and spell Soderholm at 3b.
78 Mets gave us Mazzilli who will play cf with an A- range. Valenine will platoon at 2b with Orta. Boisclair was my cheapest of backup option, but pricey at almost 1 million. Swan was a no brainer as a starter and Lockwood will set up Myers. Hausman will mop up.
78 White Sox were a challenge. Lost Squires and Proly to daggers. Definitely would have rostered both of them. Orta and Soderholm make up half my infield. Nordhagen is a power bat off the bench who can also catch. I took Kravec over Ojeda as fifth starter to save some money. It's a big downgrade but ultimately couldn't afford a fifth starter with a 1.00 WHIP. I Wanted Stearns from 78 Mets to catch but couldn't afford him so went with Nahorodny and Ashby from 88 Astros. They don't hit much but did combine for 15 homers.
88 Astros were my final team selection. I had wanted the 38 Reds but they were taken early in round 4. I needed a team with a backup SS as I didn't have one yet. Another team loaded with pitching options. Ryan, Scott, Deshaies, Darwin all good starters. Davis was my best 1b. Ramirez was my best SS, my weakest position by far. Reynolds will backup ss, Walling 3b. Ashby will share catching duties. Scott gives me 2 aces with Cone and Agosto is a valuable bullpen asset.
I chose Shea to play in over the Astrodome. It's still a pitchers park, but not as restrictive to homers as the Dome would be. We will rely on starting pitching and power hitting. Team BA is a little low at .267 and OBP is .332. Little too heavy on PA but my lack of cheap bench players forced my hand.
