Game of the Week: South Carolina vs Auburn - SEC Championship

Steve Spurrier and South Carolina look to spoil Auburn’s pursuit of perfection in this year’s SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. While the conference title is on the line, the automatic SEC BCS bid is a secondary storyline for the Tigers, as a win guarantees an appearance in the National Championship.

These two squads have already battled in 2010, as Auburn survived a September 25 showdown with a 35-27 victory thanks to Cam Newton’s five-touchdown performance. Yet this encounter was fought in the Auburn-friendly confines of Jordan-Hare Stadium, giving USC fans hope that the neutralized Georgia Dome aids in an alternative outcome.

For Auburn, the offensive assault is fueled by Heisman-hopeful Newton, who has registered 43 touchdowns on the season. The Tigers boast one of the nation’s most relentless rushing attacks with the triple-headed monster of Newton (1,336 rushing yards and 18 TDs), Michael Dyer (886 yards and 5 TDs), and Onterio McCalebb (733 yards with a 8.5 rush attempt) averaging 291.3 yards on the ground per game. This blitzkrieg has equated to the Tigers lighting up the scoreboard to the tune of 41.6 points per contest.

But despite this offensive explosion the Tigers are far from flawless. The Auburn defense has been relatively pedestrian, surrendering 25.1 points per game. This defensive deficiency has correlated into numerous close-calls for the Tigers as six games have been decided by seven points or less. Auburn does have one of the most dominant and disruptive defenders in college football in DT Nick Fairley, who has accumulated 10 sacks on the season. Yet Fairley has also caused his fair share of problems, as excessive celebration and personal foul penalties have led to extended drives for the opposition.

On the other side of that spectrum lies South Carolina, whose defense is yielding just 20.2 points per game and holding opponents to 1,118 rushing yards on the season, tops in the SEC. The Gamecocks are also opportunistic against the pass, as USC has returned five interceptions for touchdowns in 2010.

The South Carolina offense is a much-more balanced attack, with freshman running back Marcus Lattimore leading the way with 1,114 yards and 17 touchdowns. South Carolina signal caller Stephen Garcia has been erratic at times, but has posted solid numbers (2,646 yards and 18 TDs) and has built a strong affinity with All-American candidate Alshon Jeffery (75 receptions for 1,351 yards and eight scores).

So who wins this SEC shootout? According to the college football simulation engine, the Tigers come out on top 58.4 percent of the time with an average score of 33-30. For the rest of this week’s picks, check below:
