Game of the Week: Florida State at Clemson
Two of the more popular clichés in sports are when a team is "caught looking ahead" during a "trap game."
Perhaps Clemson was caught looking ahead to Florida State during a trap game against Boston College last weekend. The Tigers needed a 14-point fourth-quarter rally to beat the Eagles 24-14 at Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Tajh Boyd had his "worst" four-quarter game of the season. He finished 30-44 for 334 yards with a touchdown via the pass and one by calling his own number. His pass TD:INT ratio now sits at 15 to 2 and he's completing over two-thirds of his passes. The Tigers are 10th in the country in passing yards per game at 342 yards per contest. The 40.8 points per game are 18th in the country heading into Week 8. Now I know what you are thinking. Do any football teams play defense anymore?!
Yes, in fact, Clemson and FSU are pretty good at it. The Tigers are 10th in the country in points allowed. They have allowed 14-or-fewer points in five out of their first six games. Florida State has held opponents to 13-or-fewer points in four out of five games – 12.0 PAPG, third in the country.
Speaking of, the Seminoles were enjoying the perks that come with a BYE seven days before the ACC game of the decade. Seminoles' nation should give whoever created the 2013 schedule a standing ovation.
In an interesting plot twist, Boston College also fought Florida State for 60 minutes back in late-September. Now FSU managed to survive 48-34, but the Eagles did lead by 14 points in the second quarter before redshirt-freshman quarterback Jameis Winston torched their secondary for three touchdowns before halftime.
Speaking of Winston, in the team's last game he torched Maryland for nearly 400 passing yards and five touchdowns – both season highs. Florida State's balance on offense is scary with 320 passing yards and 228 rushing yards per game – both inside the Top 20.
We simulated the Seminoles and Tigers 101 times and it's Clemson winning 58.4 percent of the time by an average score of 26-23.
Game Fun Fact: FSU last beat Clemson at Memorial Stadium in 2001 when Jameis Winston was 7 years old.
