User Interview: Specsman

Q&A with noted SimLeagues user Specsman

We recently contacted Specsman, who has played more simleague seasons (1,135 at the time of posting) than any other users, to discuss drafting players, recommended settings, Ronald Reagan, the DH and Ted Kluszewski.

WIS

Who is specsman?

Specsman

I am an Optometrist in Hopkinsville, Ky, hence the name "specs-man."

WIS

How did you find out about WhatIfSports.com?

Specsman

I grew up playing Strat-O-Matic and even bought the computer game a few years ago. I got on the 'net to find what else was available and found you!

WIS

What was your initial reaction to our site and our games?

Specsman

Very positive! Lots of fun for $9.95/game (back then!).

WIS

Which SimLeagues or Dynasty games have you played?

Specsman

Baseball and Football the most by far. Tried Hardball Dynasty, but too much "GM" input needed.

WIS

Which do you prefer?

Specsman

I prefer baseball with the "real" major-leaguers.

WIS

Besides simulation sports websites, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?

Specsman

I am a Kentucky basketball & football fan and a very poor golfer but I love the game!

WIS

What is your favorite sports moment?

Specsman

My first major-league game at Crosley Field - Reds vs. Braves 1965. Pete Rose & Hank Aaron!

WIS

What is your favorite WIS moment?

Specsman

Whatif gave me a free 6-pack for going the longest without a baseball championship. Soon after, I won my first!

WIS

Which are your favorite teams of all-time?

Specsman

I love the Reds and like playing with '40s teams and recent Cardinal teams.

WIS

Did you play any baseball (or other sports) growing up?

Specsman

I played football, basketball and baseball in the 8th grade - had 1 day without practice the whole year! Only played baseball in HS and Babe-Ruth ball during the summer.

WIS

What players did you admire most as a kid?

Specsman

Pete Rose

WIS

Who are your favorite players in today's game?

Specsman

Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter, Roger Clemens

WIS

What is the top sports related thing you want to do in life that you have not yet done?

Specsman

Play golf at Pebble Beach.

WIS

Which five people, past or present, sit at your dream roundtable discussion?

Specsman

Jesus Christ, George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, JFK, and Billy Graham

WIS

If you could be commissioner of any league, which sport would it be and what would you do to change the game?

Specsman

Baseball. Get rid of the DH! Make all drugs illegal and ban (drug) users for life.

WIS

Having played primarily in baseball (and played it more than anyone else in the site's history), do you prefer open or theme leagues?

Specsman

Theme leagues by far! I enjoy progressives, but have a horrible record for the most part. Any theme that takes some thought to drafting is interesting to me.

WIS

In SimLeague baseball, what is your general strategy for building teams?

Specsman

I get 3-4 low OAV starting pitchers and a good closer to go with 1-2 stud everyday players and all-around good defense.

WIS

What is the most important thing to keep in mind while drafting?

Specsman

Try to draft the best everyday player available then concentrate on pitching.

WIS

How do you go about setting your lineups and pitching staffs?

Specsman

I like the recent change to "recommended" lineups given by the computer, but I usually tweak the relievers to Long A & B, plus a closer. No setup man.

WIS

How do you approach setting tendencies (advanced settings) and pitch counts?

Specsman

I have had more success with the computer-generated settings for the most part.

WIS

Do you make transactions during the season to try and separate yourself from others? Why or why not?

Specsman

Sometimes, but the problem with having so many teams is having time to make those decisions. I tend to reply to offers from others rather than propose trades myself.

WIS

Are there any players in specific that you like to put on your teams?

Specsman

The Babe, of course. And, Albert Pujols. But my favorite is Ted Kluszewski's '54 year with 100mil and under teams.

WIS

What one feature in SimLeague Baseball would you add?

Specsman

Something I've wondered about is specific individual matchups: righty/lefty matchups, pitchers vs. pinch-hitters, etc.

WIS

Do you spend much time in the forums? Why or why not?

Specsman

I check them out when I have time to find new ways to draft.

WIS

What would other users be surprised to know about you?

Specsman

I am an "old man" of 52.

WIS

Who are the users you respect and/or enjoy the most?

Specsman

Gosh, there are lots of good folks, but I guess I enjoy thejuice6 the most with his theme leagues.

WIS

What would you tell new users to the site who want to get the most out of what WhatIfSports.com has to offer?

Specsman

Just play and enjoy! Don't be afraid to ask questions in the forums.

WIS

If you were in one of our games, what sport would you play, at what position and how much would you cost?

Specsman

I would be the best baseball 200k bench player around. I could play OF and INF.
