Ichiro is the real hit king so... Topic

This is silly.

If you're talking MLB hits, the numbers are:

Rose: 4,256
Ichiro: 2,979

If you're talking professional hits, the numbers are:

Rose: 4,683 (MLB and minors)
Ichiro: 4,257 (MLB and Japan)

This is silly either way.

When former Major Leaguers play in Japan are those hits added to their Major League totals?

Do you think they are?

Yup. Pretty much spells out what I am saying. Rose may have the MLB record, but Ichiro is the real hit king.

I'm assuming some of these are rookie ball or low minors... If the argument is that Japanese baseball is roughly equivalent to AAA, then at least have the intellectual integrity to just add Petey's AAA stats. This is just a re-statement of something Petey said, which makes it immediately dubious.

Toddcommish coming the rescue of the Japs. Anti-American he is.

Doesn't matter what level of minors.

When I first heard this discussed last week, it was in the context of "professional hits". That would include all minor league levels.

Any argument that tries to present Ichiro as the all-time hits leader is intentionally attempting to define a very specific and narrow framework that would put him there. It's a very disingenuous proposition.

'tardcomm is screaming "LACIST!!!!!" at his screen now.
6/22/2016 3:02 PM
**** you, Ichiro. It's what you get for bombing Pearl Harbor.
6/22/2016 3:02 PM
FWIW, I'm not calling Ichiro the "hit king". I just was saying the argument using Petey's minor league record is pretty disingenuous on the face of it. Besides, Petey is pretty much a national embarrassment at this point.

Nothing to do with "lacism", more to do with faulty comparisons with meaningless titles.
6/22/2016 3:08 PM
Well, it's also disingenuous to include Ichiro's Japanese league hits when comparing to Pete's MLB hits.

And despite Pete being a "national embarrassment", that has nothing to do with his accomplishments on the field. None of his 4,256 hits were tainted by his issues with gambling and lying.

If Ichiro is the hit king then Sadaharu Oh is now the Homerun king. (Barry Bonds not recognized)

His haircut is an ongoing embarrassment. And as others have pointed out, he was a BAD player by the time he broke the record. I'm sure his WAR was terrrible during his final chase of Ty Cobb.

Hey, maybe we can have the statheads look up which longevity or accumulation records are the most tainted by "hanging on"... Pete trying to pass Cobb, Ripken trying to pass Gehrig, Bonds trying to pass Aaron, Glavine trying to reach 300, RJ trying to reach 300, Jeter trying to reach 3000, etc.

You realize that Ripken passed Gehrig in '95, right? That's 6 years before his career ended. How was he hanging on?

His last couple seasons were a bit rough due to injury, but he still hit .273 with 104 homers and an OPS+ of 97 after he broke Gehrig's record.
