Rickey puts up comparable offensive stats to Mattingly, and plays a position where it's very difficult to find a guy to put up stats like that.  Rickey also got 70 extra bases (80 steals, 10 CS) with his legs, and that doesn't take into consideration the first to third and first to home on a double, etc.  I was also under the impression that Rickey was an above-average fielder in his 20s.  I didn't see him play then, but that was my assumption.  I'd argue if you took Rickey off that team, they'd lose more games than if you took Mattingly.

Now, if you're going to tell me that Rickey was a selfish ***** that rubbed people the wrong way, and Mattingly was the professional and leader of that ballclub?  Maybe that's true, it's not something that can be measured.  I tend to think things that like are overstated in baseball, but it's an argument.
Rickey was known to take some plays off and not hustle.  Mattingly gave 110% every game.
What kind of lazy ***** stops at 10% extra? Why didn't he give 400000% or infinity%???

How is that not close? Mattingly also played 16 more games.
And, even with Mattingly's additional 16 games, Henderson was over 3 wins better.

I think it's pretty clear the voters care about HR and RBI above everything else.  If they need something more to make a case, they'll add clutch, leadership, etc.  Not that Mattingly wasn't valuable, but 23 -5 - 0 other first place votes shows they didn't care about much else.

Let's see...Mattingly topped Henderson in G, PA, AB, H, HR, RBI, BA, SLG and OPS.     Henderson topped Mattingly in R, SB, BB, OBP.

Yep, they only cared about HR and RBI.   Obviously.

Don't really have a dog in the Mattingly/Rickey RSF, but just wanted to mention that Willie McGee was the NL MVP in 1985. Not exactly a HR/RBI guy.

Thanks for adding G, PA, and AB, Mike. Redundant, much?

Rickey also led in SB%, R/G and times on base. Now it looks more even.

SB% is an MVP-worthy stat?

Mattingly led the major leagues in total bases (by 20) and RBI's (also by 20).

I was using the stats that were listed in the "They only cared about HR and RBI" post.

Games is?

Also if it wasn't for Rickey getting on base so much, maybe Mattingly isn't getting all those RBIs.

Games played is not my argument.

And if Mattingly's not driving in Henderson, Rickey's walks and stolen bases leave him stranded on second or third.

You don't score many runs when you're LOB.

You don't drive in runs when there's nobody on base.  It goes both ways.
