Been busy teaching the last few days, so let's catch up a little on the week's activities now:
Note: I earlier posted that the player average is $25 ($1000/40-man roster), but that's not realistic. We're building 25-man rosters and stashing away some other, cheap dudes. So let's amend: $900 for a 25-man roster = $36 per. $100 for a 15-man reserve roster = $6-7 per. That's more like it. Apply these figures to the comments below.
Surprises
Tuesday, 10/23
AJ Ellis $69--solid numbers and defense in 2012, dropped into the middle of an otherwise uninteresting career. I bid on Ellis and would love to have his line and glove, but at double the average player cost?
Robinson Cano $161--Miggy @ 250, Braun at 233, and Cano at 161. After McCutcheon and Trout, Cano is the 3rd highest salaried player, and offers A/B defense. A relative steal.
Pedro Ciriaco $76--wha? He sported a nifty .293 average in 272 PA's, but where's the power(.390 SLG)? And his glove is a D. Either someone is a Boston fan--or is betting big on Pedro's future.
Jared Burton $119--fine closer numbers(63 innings/.91 whip/.186 oav), but at what cost?
Wednesday, 10/24
Yoenis Cespedes $201--Wow. 20% of the budget for a 292/356/505 line. Cespedes ranks 51st in position player salary, but 3rd in league salary thus far. (It should be noted that this buy might be the favorite buy in the league so far for 23 teams.)
Jamey Carroll $43--This 2B has no stick(268/343/317), but dig it: he's defense is actually better at SS than 2B. He's an A+/A at SS in 537 PAs. For just a few $ more than average. Wish I had done this.
Thursday, 10/25
Yasmani Grandal $52--Great prospect. Only 200 ABs this year. Not quite a steal, though. To renew his salary will be double the average.
Prince Fielder $133--We have returned to earth.
RA Dickey $125--A much better deal than Cueto/Darvish/Cahill. Dickey is the 4th salaried pitcher. Maybe his price came down because chicks don't love the knuckle ball.
Friday, 10/26
Carl Crawford $46--125 PAs and terrible defense and someone up and pays this has been almost $50. Must be a fan of Southern California baseball.
Aroldis Chapman $99--Maybe the most dominate relief arm. Not bad, not great.
