Mensu.

Ah yes, the Mensu Dilemma. Mensu is a lock to make the playoffs, the only player you can say that about. Problem is, he costs so much that the Dodgeball Team that buys him usually is not well balanced, so why bid $50? On the other hand, if you drop out of the bidding you run the risk of two other Captains doing the same and – voila! – someone just got Mensu for $25. Is the season going to be tight with an across the board distribution of playoff teams, in which case having Mensu in the playoffs is hugely important; or will one side dominate in which case getting as many teams into the playoffs as possible is more important than having a juggernaut owner?

You can drop out of the bidding early, and let the other Captains take the responsibility for bidding him up, but what if they don’t and someone steals him? You can stay in the bidding to push the price up, but what if you are the one that gets him? If that wasn’t your strategy from the start – tying up half your payroll on a sure thing – you’ve got to trash your draft strategy and do some fast recalculating on the fly. Or maybe buying him was your strategy, and you’ve planned for it all along.

Honestly, in all my Captaincies (this is five, I believe), nothing has ever perplexed me more than the Mensu Dilemma.

Having said all that, Mensu for $1. Feel free to pass.
