Ok, here's the deal...

The season has two parts, which are separated by the all star game.

In the first half, the object is the most wins possible.  Teams get one point for each win by the all-star break.
In the second half, the object is the most losses possible.  Teams get one point for each loss after the all-star break.

At the trading deadline, you'll get a past his prime LHP, two singles hitting platoon players,  and some 1.70 WHIP relievers to help you out.

That has to be what happened in Pittsburgh this year, right?  They thought they were playing a league like this.

Hey, you are plagiarizing the 2011 Cleveland Indians!  Except they got a past his prime RHP instead of LHP, and they repeated the process this year.

He has the second-lowest WHIP of his career right now.  I don't see any trend at all.

Her is my alternate and very cynical explanation...  The owner (or GM)  makes money off revenue sharing and knows it.  Hs team plays a bit over its head in the first half and the owner knows it.  So he turns around and makes trades ostenibly to help his team "win now" but are more window dressing a stave off long term salary concerns.

Just a drunk, half-arsed theorey.
