What a great hitter

wow, knew he was battling cancer, but did not realize he was gravely ill.   Too bad, seemed like a great guy and was certainly a deserving Hall of Fame player.  RIP

A great person, class act and ballplayer. Someone that I looked up to growing up and a true role model. Sad day for sure. May God bless him and his family.

Wow is right.  Gwynn was a very fun hitter to watch.  Nice quote in the NYT obit from a former Padres hitting coach: "He’ll get some funky hits and then he’ll hit a line drive that you could hang three weeks’ wash on."

Video of Gwynn's 3000th hit (his mother, whose 64th birthday it was, shows up on the field at the 52 second mark):

Is chewing tobacco that much worse than smoking it?  Just the other day I was wasting some time on b-r.com looking up one of my prog players, Fred Brickell,  There was a link to his son, Fritz, who I'd never heard of.  I clicked on it and came to a page featuring a headshot of a very 1950s looking young man with a huge chaw of tobacky bulging in his cheek.  His bio info stated that he died at 30.  I looked him up on Wikipedia and sure enough:

A noted chewer of tobacco, Brickell died from cancer of the jaw[1] at the age of 30.[2]

My favorite player. Played with class, no show boating ala rickey holding up second base. Too bad he never got to wear a championship ring.

Terrible news. He seemed eternally young. A class player, courteous and nice, with a good sense of even self-effacing humor. My age also.

Very sorry to hear this.

Whose the only pitcher to strike him out 3 times in 1 game

I'll go with the obvious guesses: a young Doc Gooden, or an old Randy Johnson?

Just looked this up.  Nicely played, mlent!

Needless to say, the correct answer hasn't been posted yet...

.415 .476 .521 .997

That's Gwynn's career line against Greg Maddux.  107 PA.  And not one strikeout!

Believe It or Don't!
