Who are the only five players to reach base 300 times in a season they were under 23 years old during?
Gotta be Mr. Tiger Al Kaline, right?
That's a pretty good guess...

His parents must have hated him, though.  If your last name is Kaline,  you don't name your son Albert.

Sort of like if your last name is Brown, you don't name your son Charles.  Unfortunately, I know several real-world Charlie Browns.  Terrible parenting.

Reiser, Kaline, and Jeter are all incorrect. I'll post the answer later tonight if no one gets it

Roger Connor
Roger Connor is also incorrect, if this was a guess for the 300 times on base question

no ... Connor is the answer to who held the career HR record before Ruth

In 1956, Willie Mays became the 2nd 30/30 player.  Who was the first?
2/12/2016 6:36 PM
Ooohh...good question.  My first guess is Ken Williams 1922.

Update note: this is for the 30/30 question.

That is correct.   Roger Conner hit 138 HRs, the career record before Babe Ruth got out of bed.

I know a Joseph Smith. Didn't found a religion.

Another interesting question is who held the single season record for HR before Ruth.  Ruth set and broke the record 4 times.  Working backwards:

1927: 60
1921: 59
1920: 54
1919: 29

But who held it before 1919?

Hint: it was not Gavy Cravath.

I finally gave in and looked it up.  Would never have come up with him as the answer to the question, but:

(a) I've certainly heard of him, and agree that he was a great player who is not often remembered, kind of like Sam Rice (the 2000 hit in a decade guy)
(b) Like Gavy Cravath, whom we've heard a bit about in this thread, there is some dispute about the correct spelling of his name.

Cap Anson? Didn't he hit 21 in 1884?

Not Anson, but you are very very close.

Gotta be Buck Freeman for the HR record

This is it.  I think a lot of people know this, and after I posted it, I wished I did it the other way around.

The shocking thing to me is that nobody did it for over 30 years after Williams.

One of the very few players to go a full season with an OBP over .500, the answer is Joe Kelley
