I think I know this one prof, wasn't it a guy named Ed Klepp? I heard the story several years ago as he was not allowed to play on the same field as the Negro Leaguers under some laws of the time.
It was Ed Klepp, (or Klep, I find both spellings used for some reason) who pitched for the Cleveland Buckeyes in 1946, only for one game, and was harassed by (white) racists and left the league.

I doubt it. Newhouser was one of the first modern dominant power lefties. I don't see him being the guy eschewing the fastball when he was behind in the count.
Oh, thought he had a curveball. Don't know my 1940s history very well then

My Dad told me about this when I was younger and, to this day, I'm amazed how little is written about this and how it's not talked about like the amazing feat that it is.

A definite sim favorite as well, it's Ed Reulbach! Sept 26, 1908

For more context, the Cubs entered the day a half game back. Reulbach's day put them in line to win the pennant

I agree. Everyone always talks about McGinnity. Reulbach. is a true SIM stud. Iron man Joe not so much.

Cy Young?
Speaking of Cy Denton Young. When he was just a kid, the Cubs sent Cap Anson to check him out. He came back and said, "just another farm boy".

No one missed bases like Marvelous Marv Throneberry. From his obituary:

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/06/25/obituaries/marv-throneberry-60-ex-met-had-best-year-in-team-s-worst.html

In a game against the Chicago Cubs, he hit what appeared to be a game-winning triple with the bases loaded and two outs. The problem was that everybody in the dugout noticed that he missed touching first base. When the Cubs' pitcher tossed the ball to the first baseman, the umpire called Throneberry out. The inning ended and the runs didn't count. Casey Stengel, the grizzled manager of the Mets, couldn't believe it and began arguing with the first-base umpire. As they exchanged words, another umpire walked over and said, "Casey, I hate to tell you this, but he also missed second."
