Did I Mess Up with This Recruit? Topic

Back into HD after several years away.  Got two recruits (Hungate and Murphy) and I think I might have done badly with Hungate.  He was a D2 guy that I got, as I loved his 71 ath/69 def (high pot in defense) - but his PER (9) and PAS (26) are red. His BH is black (18).

I'm redshirting him but I'm wondering if he's salvageable going forward?  I only did one scouting and didn't get enough info on him - plus I poured a lot of money into Murphy in a semi-battle (he's playing very well).  Just picked up a top-25 victory - but wondering about this!

Thanks

Might we able to be a backup against an opponent's top scorer.  But I really dont even like his speed.

I'd say "mess up"

I've played defensive specialists like Hungate at SF without any big problems.  They'll turn the ball over at times, and might hurt your team's offense a bit with the low passing.  But, if you give them basically zero distro, they'll be fine.  Defense like that is definitely an asset to have in the lineup.

What's Hungate's speed potential?

Speed potential is black; looks like he will have to be a d-specialist. Thanks for the help!

he can play small forward if you have him at 0 distro and other good scorers around him. Wish he could at least rebound a bit. Maybe a career backup, but I'm not sure you throw him out.

I agree.  I would even start him in some cases and would consider him a huge asset in a zone set.

Agreed.

At D3, that is a valuable defensive player in either m2m or zone (not press).  Sure, you don't want to start him, but he can be effective at both SG & SF.

Where you may be making a mistake is redshirting him.  Sounds like he has little potential, decent WE, & decent HSGPA.  So he's going to max out in his categories without needing the extra season.  More importantly, your class sizes are ZERO, 8, 2, 2.  Having an open class can be a big benefit, in that you carryover 100% of bonus cash and retained carryover, when there are no open schollies (although it is terribly boring to sit out recruiting).  However, you are turning that into a 1, 8, 2, 1 class structure.  I suppose that you could just redshirt Murphy next season (assuming he takes it without a big WE hit), then that would give you another open class.

With a 6 scholarship cap on the budget, you might have been best off cutting two juniors when you first set foot on campus.  It's almost never a good idea to cut a senior.  The water's under the bridge now.
