I agree gillispie1, but when CS won't ban him I not going to be nice on something else he thinks he knows everything about. Not on this subject. He was being a dick again and I'm calling him out.
On your other point we do 1 point 1st round, 2 points sec, 3 third. So the furthercu go with upsets the bigger the points. I agree first round upsets should hold more weight.

give one point per correct pick with bonus points equal to seed difference f o r upsets?
3/17/2014 8:14 PM
I use a simple formula.

Points = seed + (round  x 2)

3/17/2014 8:14 PM
That's cool. I like both of those ideas. Except if you pick 2 upsets and lets say 1 final four you could still win pool. Might be bit to much

Man, this midwest bracket is ridiculous. Everyone seems to be riding Izzo, can't say I necessarily blame them. What are you buying? What are you selling?
Midwest sucks.  only 2 of the top 12 seeds won their conference tournament, and those 2 had pathetic SOS.  Only 1 of their teams is top 10 in RPI.  Manhattan sucks--only played one team in the field all year (and lost that game at home to a crappy 9 seed team).  I'd be much more scared to be in the South
You're not the only one that thinks this but I disagree. When I look at only the top 4-5 teams in each region the midwest stands out. Talking about Manhattan is irrelevant in my eyes when they are going to lose their first game by twenty.
I think the south is by far the toughest
How so? From 1 through 16? I just don't see how it's anywhere close to as top heavy.
I'm looking at teams that can win a game or be Cinderella teams. To me I see more teams that are able to do that in the south region.

I run a pool where you pick 10 teams.   You earn points based on the above formula  for each team.   The winner usually needs the national champion and at least one other final four team.

Here are the official rules:

I am running an UPSET oriented pool. It's reasonably simple; you pick 10 teams. When they win, you get points. If they lose you don't. At the end of the tournament the person with the most points wins.

Here is how you earn points:

Points = seed + (round x 2)

Sooo, if Delaware wins it's first game it is 17 points.....13 (seed) + 4 [2 (remember the old 1st round is now the 2nd round) * 2)

If Duke (3 seed) wins it's first two game you would accumulate

Round2= 3+ (2*2)= 7
Round3= 3 +(3*2) = 9
For 16 Total

If Arizona wins it all their score would look like this:

Round2= 1+4= 5
Round3= 1 +6= 7
(sweet 16)Round4= 1+8=9
(elite 8)Round5= 1+10=11
(Final 4) Round 6= 1+12=13
(Championship) Round 7= 1+14=15
TOTAL= 60

Who are ur guys upset picks? I'm liking Stephen F Austin to make a run, American to beat Wisconsin, and Mercer to pull off a win over Duke due to having an all senior line up. I have some more but those are the bigger ones.

New Mexico over Kansas. ND St over SD St. UNC over Vill.

I've been looking for a listing of teams' records against the field. Do you know of one or do you juts happen to for some reason know what Manhattan's schedule looks like?

Pick teams with lots of seniors and teams that are getting on a streak. Also grow some balls and pick upsets.
This is awful advice.
May I ask what ur strategy is?
Right now looking at a lot of different things put together. Analytics stuff like Pomeroy, risk escalating tactical considerations, etc.

Most teams with lots of seniors probably don't have the best talent (they've already gone pro) and teams getting on streaks...highly depends on the kind of streak. Like NC State had won 4 straight before losing to Duke...doesn't mean I'm going to pick them to beat St. Louis if they make the real bracket.

I was referring more to lower seeds with seniors. But still seniors in general are a plus due to how long they have played the game.

i always thought it was an interesting question, what format should be in place for bracket pools to reward picking upsets? just 1 point per team who advances, i don't think it really is enough, i feel like there should be some additional incentive, ideally based on the % chance of progressing by seed or something. that probably gets too complex, anyone familiar with a simple system that gets you most of the way there?
Pick one team from each seed line to form your team. For example, you can't pick Louisville and Michigan State, because they're both 4 seeds.

From there you can give above-seed win bonuses (say if a 12 beats a 5, you get a bonus) or just play it straight.

I'd say experience has some value, more than "streak factor" or whatever you wanted to call it. But I wouldn't load up my bracket with teams just because they have lots of seniors. I think players with significant NCAA tournament experience might provide value, though.

People called me crazy when I picked Florida Gulf Coast last year too.
