your high Def C might be as much as 10% less effective guarding a PF
Sometimes you actually WANT this. Take theyard's team for example. There is little doubt that I would allow Shaq to guard the PF position when I played Wilt, or another C only that is significant on offense, even if it pushes McHale down to him (not sure which Parish is in play). I'd do this for two reasons: the obvious one is that you would want the best D you can get if the other guy's center is a stud, but MORE importantly you want to keep Shaq away from C's with a high pf draw rate. Nothing worse than getting 24 min or so from the Daddy because he could not resist hacking the opposing C.
you've got my point backwards I think (or are approaching it from the opposite direction) - I'm talking about smokey's plan to play Malone at the C  when you actually probably want  to get him away from the C in order to force your opponent to downgrade that high defense by forcing them to that match-up at less % effectiveness

in other words if Malone plays C vs the 93-94 Mutombo your opp gets the full effectiveness of that 100d while if Mutombo guards  Malone playing PF Mutombo will get the out of position/effectiveness hit and be 7% less effective as a defender

This is the first and last time I take Artis in a 47 mil league. The salary is just too tough to deal with, especially since he comes with some major negatives (fouls, turnovers, no PF eligibility).

I'll trade you Ben Wallace for him right now tar.

I turned down nate's offer, tempting though it is - gonna give Artis a try.

Not sure I'm a fan of the Amar'e pick, btw - his best season can't play SF, where it looks like you're playing him. He'll be less than 100% regardless. I do like the Drexler pick, though.

Drexler in the 4th round is excellent value.  I don't think I've used Artis Gilmore in any league.  I'd rather draft Ben Wallace than Gilmore.

Np tar. Looks like I'll move about 6-8mpg from my bigs to SF depending on what additional usage I end up with. One reason the evals are delayed is I spent about 4 hours today analyzing how different low tov% high ts% guys would fit with Lucas and Wallace. I KNOW WIS does not give you RL ts% per se but IMO it's a stat that can be used to help determine the big picture of a player's impact on a squad. STAT had a ts% of .656 that year, which is off the charts (bball ref.com lists it #4 overall for players with at least 25ppg, Barkley holds the #1 and #2 spots btw).

One option is to play Big Ben and his 90% there for 8mpg. Since his usage is so low it is unlikely that it costs my team more than some fraction of one (singular) made shot a game. Yes, I give up 10% of his rebounding for those 8 minutes and his 100D drops if he guards the opposing Sf, but 90% of Wallace at SF still makes him the 2nd best rebounder at that position in the entire game.

Another option is opt not to use the Lucas season we both know and love so much. If I add more boards at the other positions I may trade off 4% of his efg and 6% of his creb FOR: about $1/2mill in cap space, a little over 1% more in ast%, a move from the 1-point to the 2-point usage tier, and most important a 23-point upgrade on D from 50 to 73. Unless at least one really solid 80-90 D guy makes it back to me I may be forced to do it anyway to keep my average D no lower than 68 since STAT is a cool 55.

so are you planning on playing a rotation of Stat/Lucas/Wallace at the 4/5? That will play havoc with the amount of usage you have out there

Thanks, I've NEVER used him anywhere. I kept doing database searches today and he was coming up for a number of different sort filters. He appears to have 3-4 really solid seasons that offer various tradeoffs, so I won't decide on which exact season to use until I'm building my bench after the draft, I'm sure others in the past have taken him as well for that exact reason, I.e., you have a lot of flexibilty in the final three rounds and he is a strong fit with a wide range of different player types. And man does he have some beast orb% seasons if used at the 1 or even the 2 in most cases.

Of course I have no legit PG yet and both STAT and Wallace do little to pick up the slack, and I don't have Wilt this time and his insane ast% for a big. However, one thing there is plenty of here is low usage guys with solid ast%'s, it just depends on what a team is willing to tradeoff to use one of those guys.

I enjoy the $52mill cap league, but as I've stated here before I LOVE this league, EVERY decision matters and even the final-5 non-drafted players go a long way in determining the strength of a squad, IMO this league offers the best parallel to building a team in RL in the NBA.

Tar, yep that's one reason I took Drexler and opted to wait on a PG. I understand your point very well and thought a lot about that today as well. IMO as long as there is no combination on your roster that takes you below the 10.0 combined tier-points floor then the impact isn't really that devistating. Just look at my current PPL squad for an example: (numbers in combined usage tier-points)

In the PPL my starting lineup is a combined 15.5, during each game it can range from as low as 12.5 to as high as 26 with a large portion of each game at either 18.5 or 21.5.

It is unlikely that I will add two 8-point players like I have in the PPL, however there IS a strong chance that my primary guys at SG/SF will either go 6-4; or 6-6, perhaps 4-4 but there are a few 6-point guys left out there who IMO can be useful and generally go undrafted here. I know from my own experience that the sub-logic of the sim cannot be trusted to optimize a rotation, but I will own no more than two .5 usage players and I'm leaning towards adding at least two more 4-point guys. Obviously if you can keep two 4's on the court at all times and you own no more than two .5 guys then you can't dip into the team penalty.

My plan for this team is a starting lineup of something between 13.5 and 15.5, with a floor of 11 and the possibilty of capping out right around 20, yes a range as high as 9 may be too extreme for this league and if that ends up being the case then I can chaulk up another lesson learned in the sim.

This league gives each of us many an opportunity to REALLY screw up a squad. One wrong draft decision and you may be finished since we don't have any cushion with minutes in such a low cap league, but again, that's what makes it so much fun IMO.

looking to move up in the 5th - willing to part with advantageous pick (s) in the 6th to do it
12/1/2013 11:59 PM
I know PER is not used in the SIM but I still use it to judge my scorers. The '96' malone is a 28.9 and the '77' Gervin is a 24.7 in a world where 15 is the average. Two pure outright scoring machines, these are the highest career PER years for for both players. After looking at my teams over the past 6 mo.s I realized I was simply alittle short on offense, most likely due to my reluctance to put +30usage players on my teams. The overall design appears to work well, so when I built my DDL team I used  32.7 & 30.0 usages, and the team is doing pretty well. Malone is scoring 31ppg @ 57% and Carter is scoring 25ppg @ 47%, Malone is way over RL and Carter is spot on RL. There appears to be enough shots to go around for the whole team, everyone is at or over RL stats. Gervin is a considerable upgrade wrt Carter, 47% vs 53% fg% & 69D vs 79D at about the same usage 30.0 vs 29.5. Hopefully this will bump up the overall quality of the team to ODL level. We'll find out soon enough....
