I guess what I'm saying, using the formations that are comparable, you'd get the same results, even if you practice one or both formations.
For example,
Passing out of Trips or SG would be comparable
Running out of WB or NDBox would be comparable
Either out of Pro Set or IForm would be comparable
So, you can do whatever you want and still be successful. You can practice one formation and only use that formation and do good. You can practice no formations and use them all and still do good. Or any combination of the 2. I personally believe (to a point) that the actual personnel doesn't matter as much as it should, especially on defense.
Ah...I see what you mean, and I would agree that the differences within these 3 categories would be quite small. I also agree that there should be a clearer criteria that determines the *fit* between players & formation. For instance, does FB str/blk play a stronger role when running out of I-form vs. pro-set? Is speed more important in WR in shotgun, but elu more important in trips (fewer WR, greater need to get open). Etc.
I do think you could create a very successful team using only one formation (in fact, I just started in Kenyon to try shotgun only); but to me, it is more fun to have some variability--I love running conservatively using the ND Box against those few 3-4 defense only teams I have found....
