Although my wife is saying Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction (she is a early child teacher)

She says it would be 1+2 due to the ()... then that is in the denominator so it would be 2x3... giving you 6/6... heck if I know

Probably because of the way PEMDAS used to be taught.

Yes my wife is an Elementary education teacher and she was using the PEMDAS solution to but I have to make her check herself and let her know it was 9. Looks like she is the idiot now....but I would never tell her that, I'm already sleeping in the floor.

The order that one does the parenthesis does not really matter ... the third term (1+2) goes on the top of the fraction and not the bottom.

6 x (1/2) x (1+2) =

6 x (1/2) x 3 =

9

The (1+2) would only go on the bottom of the fraction if it was written like this:

6/(2(1+2))

Personally, I would just add another set of parenthesis to eliminate the confusion.

If you strictly use PEMDAS, it should be 1.  Practically, most computer codes order multiplication and division from left to right.

20 years ago, a Thermodynamics professor asked why his students used so many parenthesis when writing code.  Unabashed, I raised my hand.  I told him that it was the only way I could be certain of the order of operations.
